The 1986 United States House of Representatives elections was held on November 4, 1986, to elect United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representatives to serve in the 100th United States Congress. They occurred in the middle of President of the United States, President Ronald Reagan's second term in office, while he was still relatively popular with the American public. As in most mid-term elections, the president's party — in this case, the United States Republican Party, Republican Party — lost seats, with the United States Democratic Party, Democratic Party gaining a net of five seats and cementing its majority. These results were not as dramatic as those in the United States Senate elections, 1986, Senate, where the Republicans lost control of the chamber to the Democrats. The Peace and Freedom Party (PFP) is a socialist political party in the United States which operates mostly in California. It was formed in 1966 from anti–Vietnam War and pro–civil rights movements. The 1986 United States Senate election in Louisiana was held on November 4, 1986. Democratic nominee John Breaux defeated Republican nominee Henson Moore with 52.82% of the vote. Campaign U.S. Senator Russell B. Long declined to seek another term in the 1986 election. Republican candidate Moore placed first ahead of Democratic candidate Breaux in the primary. President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush campaigned in the state two and four times respectively. Two weeks before the election Judge Dickinson R. John Berlinger Breaux (; born March 1, 1944) is an American lobbyist, attorney, and retired politician from Louisiana. He served in the United States House of Representatives, U.S. House of Representatives from 1972 to 1987 and as a United States Senate, United States Senator from 1987 to 2005. Berkley Warren Bedell (March 5, 1921 – December 7, 2019) was an American Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party politician and businessman who served as the United States House of Representatives, U.S. representative for Iowa's 6th congressional district from 1975 to 1987. After starting a successful business in his youth, Berkley (fishing), Berkley Fly Co., he ran for Congress in 1972, but was defeated by incumbent Wiley Mayne. William Wyche Fowler Jr. (; born October 6, 1940) is an American attorney, politician, and diplomat. He is a member of the Democratic Party and served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1987 to 1993. He had previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987. John Donald Fuqua (born August 20, 1933) is a former U.S. Democratic politician from Florida. He represented Florida in the United States House of Representatives from 1963 to 1987.
