The 1986 Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball tournament was the final event of the 1985–86 season in the Ohio Valley Conference. The tournament was held March 3–5, 1986, at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio. Akron defeated in the championship game, 68–63, to win their first OVC men's basketball tournament. The Zips received an automatic bid to the 1986 NCAA tournament as the No. 15 seed in the Midwest region. Akron () is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. 1985–86 Akron Zips Men's Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Akron Zips men's basketball team represented the University of Akron during the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Zips, led by second-year head coach Bob Huggins, played their home games at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 22–8, 10–4 in OVC play to finish in first place. They defeated Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, and Middle Tennessee State to win the OVC tournament. Bob Huggins
Robert Edward Huggins (born September 21, 1953) is an American college basketball coach. Nicknamed “Huggy Bear,” he is currently the head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team. Huggins previously held the head coaching positions at Walsh College (1980–1983), the University of Akron (1984–1989), the University of Cincinnati (1989–2005) and Kansas State University (2006–2007). He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. One of only six coaches ever with 900 or more career victories, Huggins has been to 24 total NCAA tournaments, including 23 in the last 26 seasons. He has led his teams to nine Sweet Sixteen appearances, four Elite Eight appearances, and two Final Four appearances (1992 with Cincinnati and 2010 with West Virginia). 1986 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1986 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1986, and ended with the championship game on March 31 in Dallas, Texas. A total of 63 games were played. Louisville, coached by Denny Crum, won the national title with a 72–69 victory in the final game over Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski. Pervis Ellison of Louisville was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Louisville became the first team from outside a power conference to win the championship since the expansion to 64 teams, and remains one of only two teams to do so (the other team was UNLV in 1990).
