1985 Wimbledon Championships – Men's Singles
Boris Becker defeated Kevin Curren in the final, 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 7–6(7–3), 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1985 Wimbledon Championships. It was his first Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major title. He was the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon men's singles title, and became the youngest-ever male major singles champion aged (this record would later be broken by Michael Chang at the 1989 French Open – Men's singles, 1989 French Open). John McEnroe was the two-time defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Curren. This ended McEnroe's streak of five consecutive Wimbledon finals. Curren also defeated Jimmy Connors in the semifinals, becoming the first player to defeat both Connors and McEnroe at the same major. Boris Franz Becker (; born 22 November 1967) is a German former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the List of ATP number 1 ranked players, world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Eliot Teltscher (born March 15, 1959) is a retired professional American tennis player. He won the 1983 French Open Mixed Doubles. His highest ranking in singles was No. 6 in the world and in doubles was No. 38 in the world. Tennis career Early years Teltscher was born in Palos Verdes, California and lives in Irvine, California. Chris Lewis (tennis)
Christopher John Lewis (born 9 March 1957) is a New Zealand former professional tennis player. Lewis reached the 1983 Wimbledon singles final as an unseeded player. He won three singles titles and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 19 in April 1984. He also won eight doubles titles during his 12 years on the tour. Lewis was coached by Harry Hopman and Tony Roche. Stephen "Steve" Shaw (born 1 January 1963) is a former professional tennis player from England who competed for Great Britain. Career While studying sports medicine, Shaw played college tennis for the University of Alabama, from 1980 to 1982. Shaw made his first big impression on the Grand Prix tennis circuit in 1985, when he made the final four at a tournament in Marbella. He had to retire hurt during his semi-final with Horacio de la Peña. The Englishman also reached quarter-finals in the 1987 Bordeaux Open and 1988 Bristol Open. Gary Muller (born 27 December 1964) is a former professional South African tennis player. Muller turned pro in 1985. His 12-year career included wins over Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Michael Chang and Stefan Edberg. Muller's best singles result at a Grand Slam was reaching the third round in the 1987 Australian Open in which he lost to Miloslav Mečíř of Czechoslovakia. Peter McNamara (5 July 1955 – 20 July 2019) was an Australian tennis player and coach. McNamara won five singles titles and nineteen doubles titles in his career. A right-hander, McNamara reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on 14 March 1983 when he became world No. 7. McNamara and fellow Australian Paul McNamee won the 1980 and 1982 men's doubles championship at Wimbledon and the Australian Open doubles in 1979. McNamara's highest rank in doubles was No. 3. Heinz Peter Günthardt (; born 8 February 1959) is a retired tennis player from Switzerland. Tennis player career Günthardt won five singles titles during his professional career, including the Rotterdam WCT in 1980. The right-hander reached his career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 22 in April 1986. In doubles, he captured a total number of 30 titles. Ricardo Acuña (born 13 January 1958) is a former tennis player from Chile, who won three doubles titles during his career. The right-hander reached his highest Association of Tennis Professionals, ATP singles ranking of World No. 47 in March 1986.
