1985 Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament
The 1985 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament was the postseason women's basketball tournament for the Sun Belt Conference beginning on March 7, 1985, and ending on March 9, 1985, in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. at the Old Dominion University Fieldhouse. Top-seeded Old Dominion defeated Western Kentucky in the championship game, 76–63, to win their third Sun Belt women's basketball tournament. The Lady Monarchs received an automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA tournament. They were joined by conference runner-up Western Kentucky, who received an at-large bid. Old Dominion went on to win the NCAA tournament 70–65 against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs. Western Kentucky made it to the Final Four, but lost to Georgia 78–91. Old Dominion University Fieldhouse
Old Dominion University Fieldhouse was a 5,200-seat multi-purpose arena located on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Opened in 1970, it was home to the Old Dominion Monarchs and Lady Monarchs college basketball teams until the season, when the Ted Constant Convocation Center opened. was demolished in 2006. The UAB Blazers women's basketball team represents the University of Alabama at Birmingham in women's basketball. The 1985 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 1–3 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. Top-seeded VCU defeated rival Old Dominion in the championship game, 87–82, to win their third Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. The Rams, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA tournament. They were joined in the tournament by fellow Sun Belt members UAB and Old Dominion, both of whom received at-large bids. The South Florida Bulls women's basketball team represents the University of South Florida in women's basketball. The 1985 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament began on March 14 and ended on March 31 and featured 32 teams. The Final Four consisted of Old Dominion, Northeast Louisiana, Western Kentucky, and Georgia, with Old Dominion defeating Georgia, 70–65 in the championship game. Old Dominion's Tracy Claxton was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. 1985 is the first year ESPN began televising some of the Tournament games.
