1984 Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1984 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 2–4 at the Birmingham–Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Hosts UAB upset in the championship game, 62–60, to win their third overall, as well as third consecutive, Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. The Blazers, in turn, received an automatic bid for the 1984 NCAA tournament. They were joined in the tournament by fellow Sun Belt member VCU, who received an at-large bid. Format There were no changes made to the tournament format from the previous year. All eight conference members were placed into the initial quarterfinal round, with each team being seeded based on its regular season conference record. The 1983–84 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1983–84 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was head coach Gene Bartow's sixth season at UAB, and the Blazers played their home games at BJCC Coliseum. They finished the season 23–11, 8–6 in Sun Belt play and won the Sun Belt tournament. Gene Bartow
Bobby Gene Bartow (August 18, 1930 January 3, 2012) was an American men's college basketball coach. The Browning, Missouri, native coached 36 years at six universities after coaching two high schools in Missouri for six years. In 1972 Bartow coached the Puerto Rico national basketball team in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. High school Bartow began his coaching at the prep level in Missouri, coaching Shelbina and St. Charles High School basketball squads to a 145–39 win–loss mark in six seasons. His 1957 St. Charles team won the state championship, defeating North Kansas City in the Class L finals by a score of 60–54. College Bartow coached at Central Missouri State University from 1961 to 1964, Valparaiso University from 1964 to 1970, and Memphis State University from 1970 until 1974, and he led the Memphis State Tigers to the 1973 NCAA national championship game and consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles in the 1971–72 and 1972–73 seasons. The Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament has been played every year since the formation of the Sun Belt Conference prior to the 1976–77 American collegiate academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. History Format The size and format of the Sun Belt tournament has varied widely since its establishment in 1976. The size of the conference has ranged between a minimum of six teams and as many as thirteen. Nonetheless, the tournament has consistently utilized a simple single-elimination style tournament. Through the 2018 edition of the tournament, with a few exceptions, all conference members were typically invited to each tournament. 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1984 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 53 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1984, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Seattle. A total of 52 games were played. This was the last tournament in which some teams earned first-round byes as the field expanded to 64 teams beginning in the 1985 tournament when each team played in the first round. It was also the second year with a preliminary round; preliminary games would not be played again until 2001. Georgetown, coached by John Thompson, won the national title with an 84–75 victory in the final game over Houston, coached by Guy Lewis. The 1983–84 South Alabama Jaguars basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 1983–84 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament
The Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament has been played every year since the 1982-83 academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. In 2007, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth, as Louisiana–Lafayette (regular season champ of the West Division) received an invite to the national tournament despite losing in the conference tournament final. The following year, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth again, as Middle Tennessee State received an invite to the national tournament. In 2010, it happened again, as Little Rock received an at-large bid, having entered the conference tourney as a #1 seed, before losing to Middle Tennessee in double overtime.
