1984 ECAC South Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1984 ECAC South men's basketball tournament (now known as the Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball tournament) was held March 8–10 at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Richmond defeated Navy in the championship game, 74–55, to win their first ECAC South men's basketball tournament and, therefore, earn an automatic bid to the 1984 NCAA tournament. This was Richmond's first-ever bid to the NCAA tournament. James Madison University Convocation Center
The JMU Convocation Center is a 6,426-seat multi-purpose arena in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The arena opened in 1982, and was home to the James Madison Dukes men's basketball and James Madison Dukes women's basketball teams through the 2019–20 season. It hosted the 1984 ECAC South men's basketball tournament (now known as the Colonial Athletic Association). It was one of the rotating host venues for the CAA women's basketball tournament, having hosted the tournament six times since 1987. Dick Tarrant
Richard Joseph Tarrant Jr. (born September 15, 1928) was the head men's basketball coach at the University of Richmond from 1981 through 1993. Tarrant, led the Spiders to five NCAA tournament and four NIT berths in his twelve seasons as head coach—the first postseason appearances in school history. The Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Coastal Athletic Association (formerly known as the Colonial Athletic Association). 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1984 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 53 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1984, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Seattle. A total of 52 games were played. This was the last tournament in which some teams earned first-round byes as the field expanded to 64 teams beginning in the 1985 tournament when each team played in the first round. It was also the second year with a preliminary round; preliminary games would not be played again until 2001. Georgetown, coached by John Thompson, won the national title with an 84–75 victory in the final game over Houston, coached by Guy Lewis.
