Decathlon
The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of 10 track and field events. The word "decathlon" was formed, in analogy to the word "pentathlon", from Greek δέκα (''déka'', meaning "ten") and ἄθλος (''áthlos'', or ἄθλον, ''áthlon'', meaning "contest" or "prize"). Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon. Traditionally, the title of " World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the person who wins the decathlon. This began when Gustav V of Sweden told Jim Thorpe, "Sir, you are the world's greatest athlete" after Thorpe won the decathlon at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. Steffen Grummt
Steffen Grummt (born 15 September 1959 in Wilkau-Haßlau, Saxony) is an East German decathlete who competed from the late 1970s to 1983. He later competed in bobsleigh in the mid-1980s. Biography As a decathlete, Grummt finished eighth at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He also finished fourth at the 1982 European Championships in Athletics in Athens and eighth at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki. Following East Germany's boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Grummt switched to bobsleigh where he found better success. In bobsledding, Grummt won a complete set of medals at the FIBT World Championships with a gold (Four-man: 1985), a silver (Two-man: 1985), and a bronze (Two-man: 1986). Grummt is head of the sports school in Mainz, Germany. John Harrison Crist (born August 28, 1954) is a retired decathlete from the United States, who finished in sixth place (8130 points) at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Claudio Escauriza (born 3 May 1958 in Paraguay) is a Paraguayan athletics coach and former decathlete, who competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States of America and the 1st IAAF World Championships in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland. Escauriza represented Paraguay at several South American Championships, and also holds the Paraguayan national record in decathlon with a score of 6,943. Joško Vlašić (; born 22 July 1956) is a Croatian athletics coach and a former decathlete who represented Yugoslavia. Vlašić's greatest competitive success was winning the decathlon gold medal at the 1983 Mediterranean Games, but he is best known for coaching his daughter Blanka Vlašić, a world champion high jumper.
