Javelin Throw
The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown as far as possible. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong (''Amentum, ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', a leather strap around the shaft, so when they released the javelin, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. Beate Edeltraud Peters (born 12 October 1959) is a retired West German javelin thrower. Biography She finished seventh at the 1983 World Championships and the 1984 Summer Olympics. She then won bronze medals at the 1986 European Championships and the 1987 World Championships. She also participated at the 1988 Olympics, but did not reach the final. She became West German champion in 1985 and 1986. She represented the clubs OSC Dortmund and TV Wattenscheid. Her personal best throw was 69.56 metres with the old javelin type, achieved in July 1986 in Berlin. Karin Smith
Karin Kiefer Smith (born August 4, 1955, in Fürstenfeldbruck, Bavaria) is a retired female javelin thrower from the United States. She was born in Germany. She is a three-time Olympian. Smith qualified for a fourth, the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. She did, however, receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the spurned athletes. Her all-time career-best mark was 212 feet, 6 inches in August 1980.
