1983 TAAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1983 Trans America Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament (now known as the ASUN men's basketball tournament) was held March 10–12, 1983 at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, Arkansas. Georgia Southern upset top-seeded in the championship game, 68–67, to win their first TAAC/Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament. The Eagles, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1983 NCAA tournament, their first Division I tournament appearance. Northeast Louisiana departed the TAAC for the Southland Conference prior to the season and were replaced with Nicholls State. 1982–83 Georgia Southern Eagles Men's Basketball Team
The 1982–83 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University during the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by first year head coach Frank Kerns, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference. The team finished third in the regular season conference standings and won the TAAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – the first appearance in program history. Frank Kerns
Franklin Phillip "Frank" Kerns (May 21, 1933 – August 3, 2015) was an American basketball coach. He coached Georgia Southern from 1981 to 1994. A native of Cumberland, Maryland, Kerns served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later earned a degree in physical education from the University of Alabama. Kerns served as coach of Georgia Southern from 1982 to 1994, compiling a record of 244–132. A four-time Trans America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Kerns coached the Eagles to NCAA Tournaments in 1983, 1987, and 1992. The Eagles also reached the National Invitation Tournament in 1988 and 1989 under the direction of Kerns. He later coached in China for a year and in Austria for six years. He then coached at Bulloch Academy for several years. Kerns was color analyst for Georgia Southern Radio for eight years. ASUN Men's Basketball Tournament
The ASUN Conference men's basketball tournament (formerly known as the Trans America Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament between 1979 and 2001) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the ASUN Conference, formerly known as the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC) and Atlantic Sun Conference. The tournament has been held every year since 1979, except for 1992–93. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, as long as it is eligible for NCAA-sponsored postseason play. The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League.
