1983 NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament
The 1983 NCAA men's volleyball tournament was the 14th annual tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA men's collegiate volleyball. The tournament was played at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio during May 1983. UCLA defeated Pepperdine in the final match, 3–0 (15–10, 16–14, 15–7), to win their tenth national title. The Bruins (27–4) were coached by Al Scates. UCLA's Ricci Luyties was named the tournament's ''Most Outstanding Player''. Luyties, along with six other players, comprised the ''All-tournament team''. Qualification Until the creation of the NCAA Men's Division III Volleyball Championship in 2012, there was only a single national championship for men's volleyball. As such, all NCAA men's volleyball programs (whether from Division I, Division II, or Division III) were eligible. A total of 4 teams were invited to contest this championship. UCLA Bruins Men's Volleyball
The UCLA men's volleyball program represents the University of California, Los Angeles in the sport of men's volleyball as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). UCLA played its first season in 1953 and has won a record 21 NCAA men's volleyball tournament, NCAA titles. Al Scates had been the head coach each year since 1963 until his retirement after the 2012 season. John Speraw took over as head coach after Scates’ retirement. After the 2024 season, Speraw left the program to become the president and CEO of USA Volleyball. John Hawks, who was previously an assistant coach for the Bruins from 2015-2022, would return as the team’s head coach. The Bruins play most of their home matches in Pauley Pavilion, but when Pauley is not available, they play in the Wooden Center. 1978 NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament
The 1978 NCAA men's volleyball tournament was the ninth annual tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA men's college volleyball. The tournament was played at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio during May 1978. Pepperdine defeated UCLA in the final match, 3–2 (15–12, 11–15, 15–8, 5–15, 15–12), to win their first national title. Coached by Marv Dunphy, the Waves finished the season 21–4. Pepperdine's Mike Blanchard was named ''Most Outstanding Player'' of the tournament. An ''All-tournament team'' of seven players was also named.
