1983 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship
The 1983 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship was the second annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national championship of NCAA women's college lacrosse. The championship game was played at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during May 1983. The Delaware Blue Hens won their first championship by defeating the Temple Owls in the final, 10–7. The leading scorer for the tournament was Karen Emas, from Delaware, with 14 goals. Emas was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Qualification Until 1985, there was only one NCAA championship; a Division III title was added in 1985 and a Division II title in 2001. Hence, all NCAA women's lacrosse programs were eligible for this championship. A total of 12 teams were invited to contest the tournament, expanding on the 2 teams from the previous year. Franklin Field
Franklin Field is a sports stadium in Philadelphia, United States, at the eastern edge of the University of Pennsylvania's campus. It is the home stadium for the Penn Relays, and the University of Pennsylvania's stadium for football, track and field and lacrosse. It is also used by Penn students for recreation, and for intramural and club sports, including touch football and cricket, and is the site of Penn's graduation exercises, weather permitting. Franklin Field is the oldest stadium still operating for football. It was the first college stadium in the United States with a scoreboard and the second with an upper deck of seats. Linda Catherine Schmidt (November 27, 1958 – March 12, 2021) was an American mechanical engineer whose interests included the engineering design process, the use of formal grammars in design, and engineering education. She was a faculty member in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. Life Schmidt was born on November 27, 1958, in Blue Island, Illinois. She studied industrial engineering at Iowa State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1989 and a master's degree in 1991. Her master's degree research concerned queueing theory, under the mentorship of John Jackman. She next went to Carnegie Mellon University for doctoral study in mechanical engineering, completing her Ph.D. in 1995. Overtime (sports)
Overtime or extra time is an additional period of play specified under the rules of a sport to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament. The rules of overtime or extra time vary between sports and even different competitions. Some may employ "sudden death", where the first player or team who scores immediately wins the game. In others, play continues until a specified time has elapsed, and only then is the winner declared.
