A wild card (also wildcard or wild-card and also known as an at-large berth or at-large bid) is an invitation to a tournament or a playoff berth awarded to a team or individual that does not qualify via an automatic bid. Carina Karlsson (born 11 September 1963) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. She was nicknamed "Kid Carina". Biography Karlsson is most noted for being the first qualifier to reach the ladies quarterfinals of Wimbledon, which she achieved at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships. She began the main draw with wins over Anne White and Christiane Jolissaint, then defeated former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade in the third round, 11–9 in the deciding set. In the fourth round she upset 15th seed Andrea Temesvári to set up a quarterfinal against Chris Evert-Lloyd, which Evert won in straight sets. Nanette Schutte (born 6 April 1962) is a Dutch former professional tennis player who was active during the 1980s. Schutte was junior singles champion of the Netherlands in the age categories Under-12, 14, 16 and 18. She reached a highest singles ranking of world No. 190 in 1987. Marianne Werdel (born October 17, 1967) is an American former professional tennis player. Werdel was born in Los Angeles and played on the WTA Tour from 1982 to 1997. She is also known as Marianne Witmeyer or Werdel-Witmeyer. She won 19 national junior titles. In 1988 Werdel suffered a partially herniated disc, forcing a two-month absence from the tour. At the 1995 Australian Open, unseeded Marianne Werdel defeated fifth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in a first-round match. Carmen Perea Alcalá (born 3 May 1952) is a former professional tennis player from Spain. Biography Perea was born in Melilla, an autonomous Spanish city on the African continent. She later moved to Málaga, and at tage 18, settled in Barcelona. From 1973 to 1983, she appeared in 29 Federation Cup ties for Spain, winning 19 matches overall. One of her singles wins over was West German Sylvia Hanika in 1980. During this period, she was the top female player in Spain, and she won nine Spanish Tennis Championships in a run that included 10 successive finals.
