1982–83 Xavier Musketeers Men's Basketball Team
The 1982–83 Xavier Musketeers men's basketball team represented Xavier University from Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1982–83 season. Led by head coach Bob Staak, the Musketeers finished with a 22–8 record (10–4 MCC), and won the MCC tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In the NCAA tournament, the Musketeers lost to fellow No. 12 seed Alcorn State in the Play-in round. Bob Staak
Robert John Staak (born December 22, 1947) is an American former college basketball and professional basketball coach. Early life Staak was born in Darien, Connecticut. He attended Darien High School, where he played basketball and became the all-time leading scorer with 1,166 points, a mark that still stands. He graduated in 1966, and he was recruited by about 100 universities. College career Staak attended St. John's University as a freshman, taking business courses. However, living off-campus didn't provide the atmosphere he was looking for, and when he decided that he wanted to someday be a basketball coach and St. John's didn't offer the academic concentration he sought, he transferred to the University of Connecticut. Due to transfer rules, he had to sit out a year before playing basketball for UConn. Charles M. Murphy Athletic Center (commonly known as the Murphy Center) is the name of the main athletic department building at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The building opened December 11, 1972, and is named in honor of former athletics director Charles M. "Bubber" Murphy, a standout athlete at the college in the 1930s, who also served as head coach of Middle Tennessee State's football (1947–1968), basketball (1948–1949), and baseball (1951, 1953–1955) programs. The Xavier Musketeers are the 19 teams representing Xavier University in intercollegiate athletics, including men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. The 1982–83 La Salle Explorers men's basketball team represented La Salle University as a member of the East Coast Conference during the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by head coach Lefty Ervin and played their home games at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After finishing in a three-way tie atop the ECC East division standings, the Explorers won the ECC tournament to receive a bid to the NCAA tournament.
