1982 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1982 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 5–7, 1982 at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, Louisiana. Southwestern Louisiana defeated in the championship game, 81–75, to win their first Southland men's basketball tournament. The Ragin' Cajuns received a bid to the 1982 NCAA Tournament as No. 8 seed in the Mideast region. They were the only Southland member invited to the NCAA tournament. Regular season runner-up Lamar received an invitation to the 1982 NIT Tournament. Format Five of seven of the conference's members participated in the tournament field. They were seeded based on regular season conference records, with the top two seeds earning byes into the semifinal round. and did not participate. and began play in the quarterfinal round. Blackham Coliseum
Blackham Coliseum is a multipurpose arena in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was built on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus in 1949 as the home to the then-named SLI Bulldogs, now called the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball teams. The arena was named for Stafford Morgan Blackham, former dean of the Department of Animal Husbandry at SLI, and as such it was built to host livestock exhibitions as well as athletics (in a similar manner to the usage of LSU's Parker Coliseum). It replaced the 1,500-seat Earl K. Long Gymnasium as home to the athletics teams. It remained the home for the men's team until the Cajundome was completed in 1984. The women continue to play the majority of their games at Earl K. Long. Blackham hosted the Southland Conference men's basketball tournament in 1982. The 1981–82 Southwestern Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team represented the University of Southwestern Louisiana as an NCAA Independent during the 1981–82 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Ragin' Cajuns, led by 6th-year head coach Bobby Paschal, played their home games at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, Louisiana. Bobby Paschal
Bobby Paschal (born October 22, 1941) is a retired college basketball coach. He was head coach of the South Florida Bulls team from 1986 to 1996, as well as the Southwestern Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns from 1978 to 1986. A native of Enterprise, Alabama, Paschal played college basketball at Chipola College and Stetson University in Florida. Following the close of his college career, he coached at the high school level at Ashford High School in Alabama and then Plant High School in Tampa. He then spent a year as an assistant at Livingston College (now the University of West Alabama) while obtaining a master's degree before moving to Florida Southern College. He moved to Southwestern Louisiana in 1974 and was elevated to head coach with the departure of Jim Hatfield. Over his career, Bobby Paschal was head coach of two NCAA Division I programs. Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. From 1981 to 2001, the first round of the tournament took place at the higher seed, with the remaining rounds at a set location. In 2002, the Southland changed the format to play games at the campus of sites of each higher seed, during every round of the tournament. This was changed again in 2007, the first year that the conference selected a neutral site for all rounds of the tournament.
