1982 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament
The 1982 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament was the first Women's Basketball Tournament held under the auspices of the NCAA. From 1972 to 1982, there were AIAW women's basketball tournament, national tournaments for Division I schools held under the auspices of the AIAW. Norfolk Scope
Norfolk Scope is a multi-function complex in Norfolk, Virginia, comprising the 11,000-seat Scope Arena, a 2,500-seat theater known as Chrysler Hall, a modular exhibition hall, and a 600-car parking garage. The arena was designed by Italian architect/engineer Pier Luigi Nervi in conjunction with the (now defunct) local firm Williams and Tazewell, which designed the entire complex. Nervi's design for the arena's reinforced concrete dome derived from the PalaLottomatica and the much smaller Palazzetto dello Sport, which were built in the 1950s for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Construction on Scope began in June 1968 at the northern perimeter of Norfolk's downtown and was completed in 1971 at a cost of United States dollar, $35 million. Baylor Lady Bears Basketball
The Baylor Bears women's basketball team represents Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in NCAA Division I women's basketball competition. They currently compete in the Big 12 Conference. The team plays its home games in the Foster Pavilion. Before the 2021–22 season, the team had been known as the "Lady Bears", but on September 3, 2021, the school officially announced that women's basketball had dropped "Lady" from its nickname. At the same time, soccer and volleyball, the other two Baylor women's teams that were still using "Lady" in their nicknames, also abandoned that usage. The Western Collegiate Athletic Association (WCAA) was a women's-only athletic conference on the West Coast of the United States. Members competed in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) until the 1981–82 academic year, then the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For its final year in 1985–86, the league was renamed Pacific West Conference; the Pac-10 Conference added women's sports in 1986 and the WCAA was retired. Lorri Bauman
Lorri A. Bauman is an American former basketball player for the Drake Bulldogs. She was the first woman in NCAA history to score 3,000 points and at one time held the record for NCAA Division 1 women's basketball points scored in a career; the record has been successively broken by Patricia Hoskins, Jackie Stiles, Kelsey Plum, Brittney Griner, Kelsey Mitchell and most recently Caitlin Clark also surpassing Bauman's career total. Early years Bauman began playing basketball at age 10 in a Salvation Army league. She gained notoriety while playing for Des Moines East High School in the late 1970s. Pam Kelly
Pamela Kelly-Flowers, a native of Columbia, Louisiana is an American former women's basketball player at Louisiana Tech University. She won two national championships for the Lady Techsters. She was named to the All-American team in 1980, 1981, and 1982, her school's only three-time All-American. Kelly won the 1982 Wade Trophy and the 1982 Honda Sports Award for basketball, awards presented annually to the best women's basketball player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. She was enshrined as a charter member into the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984, and her #41 jersey was retired. She was inducted in 1992 into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Leon Barmore
William Leon Barmore (born June 3, 1944) is a college women's basketball coach best known for his 35-year association with the Louisiana Tech University Lady Techsters. After five years as an assistant coach, he served as head coach from 1982 to 2002, serving the first three years as co-head coach with Sonja Hogg, who had begun the program in 1974. Upon his retirement, Barmore's .869 winning percentage was the best in major college basketball history, for both men and women's basketball. His nine appearances in the Final Four was second most in NCAA women's basketball history, and as of 2023 it is tied for fourth most all-time. Wade Trophy
The Wade Trophy is an award presented annually to the best upperclass women's basketball player in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) NCAA Division I, Division I competition. It is named after three–time national champion Delta State Lady Statesmen basketball, Delta State University coach Margaret Wade (basketball coach), Lily Margaret Wade. The award debuted in 1978 as the first–ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball.
