NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is the lowest division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that do not offer athletic scholarships to student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956. The College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III. D-I and D-II schools are allowed to offer athletic scholarships, while D-III schools are not. D-III is the NCAA's largest division with around 450 member institutions, which are 80% private and 20% public. The 1981–82 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began in October 1981 and concluded with the 1982 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 27, 1982 at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island. This was the 35th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 88th year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team. 1981–82 NCAA Division II Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1981–82 NCAA Division II men's ice hockey season began in November 1981 and concluded on March 20, 1982. This was the 18th season of second-tier college ice hockey. Boston State began merging with University of Massachusetts Boston, Massachusetts–Boston in September 1981. Because of this Boston State did not field a team for the 1981–82 season though they were still considered members of ECAC 2. After the merger was completed Massachusetts–Boston promoted their program from Division III to Division II beginning with the 1982–83 season.
