The 1980 Brisbane Rugby League premiership was the 73rd season of Brisbane's professional rugby league football competition. Norths Devils
The Northern Suburbs Devils, or North Brisbane Devils, or often simply referred to as Norths for short, are a rugby league club representing the northern suburbs of Brisbane, Australia. The team colours are sky blue, navy blue and gold. They play in the Queensland Cup, Hostplus Cup, and, through their predecessors, are one of the oldest clubs in Australia. Ross Strudwick
Ross Strudwick (born 1950) is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. An Australian international, New South Wales and Queensland representative halfback of the 1970s, he played club football in the New South Wales Rugby Football League Premiership for St. George and in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for Fortitude Valley. Strudwick later embarked on a coaching career in Queensland and England. Playing Strudwick started his career in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership with St. George Dragons in 1969. He played there until 1972, gaining selection for New South Wales during this period. Strudwick was the understudy to the champion Dragons halfback Billy Smith during that period, thus his first grade appearances were irregular. Purtell Park
Purtell Park is a rugby league ground in Bardon, a suburb in Brisbane's west, in Queensland, Australia. It is now the home of Wests Brisbane Juniors Rugby League Football Club (catering for approximately 300 young players), Voices of Birralee (catering for approximately 400 young singers), Western Districts Gymnastics, and a venue for Premier Touch Football and TRL. Wests Panthers
The Western Suburbs Panthers, or the West Brisbane Panthers, or often simply referred to as Wests for short, is a semi professional rugby league club based in the western suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The club is the oldest in the QRL and despite absences from the top grade in recent years and several name changes the club continued to operate. After leaving the Queensland Cup, they participated in the Brisbane A-Grade competition from 2005 until their senior sides disbanding in 2012. In 2013, the club entered a voluntary hiatus, but was announced to be part of the revived Brisbane Rugby League. Bob McCarthy
Robert James McCarthy MBE (born 5 August 1946) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer and coach. He played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, New South Wales and for the Australian national side. He later coached in Brisbane, taking Souths Magpies to a premiership in 1981 and coaching the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants upon their entry to the Winfield Cup. Since 2001 he has been the chairman of both the Australian and NSW state selection panels. Ian Pearce (rugby League)
Ian Pearce (5 February 1947 – 1 December 1993), also known by his nickname Bunny, was an Australian rugby league footballer and coach. A Queensland representative in the pre-State of Origin interstate rugby league series, Pearce played club football for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Brisbane Rugby League as a goal-kicking in the 1970s and 1980s. Pearce is remembered as one of the club's greatest players, despite never winning a premiership. Background Pearce was born in Blackbutt, Queensland on 5 February 1947. The son of a Benarkin forestry worker, Peace grew up in Blackbutt and played rugby league for the town's club in the South Burnett Rugby League as a goal-kicking centre, with whom he won the 1968, 1973, and 1974 SBRL senior finals. Frank Stanton (rugby League)
Frank Stanton (born 7 February 1940 in St Leonards, New South Wales), also known by the nickname of "Biscuits", is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s, and was a successful club and national representative coach in the 1970s and 1980s. Redcliffe Dolphins
Redcliffe Dolphins are a semi-professional rugby league club based in Redcliffe, Queensland, Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1947, they were accepted into the Brisbane Rugby League premiership (rugby league competition), Brisbane Rugby League (BRL) premiership competition in 1960, and since 1996 have played in the Queensland Cup. The Redcliffe Dolphins thrived in the BRL. However, the 1988 admission of the Brisbane Broncos team in the New South Wales Rugby League competition caused the decline of the BRL. Greg Holben is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. A Queensland State of Origin representative utility back, he played his in the Brisbane Rugby League for the Eastern Suburbs (winning the 1977 and 1978 grand finals with them) and Brothers clubs.
