Defending champion Björn Borg defeated Víctor Pecci in the final, 6–3, 6–1, 6–7(6–8), 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1979 French Open. Björn Borg
Björn Rune Borg (; born 6 June 1956) is a Swedish former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 109 weeks. Borg won 66 singles titles during his career, including eleven majors: six at the French Open and five consecutively at Wimbledon. Corrado Barazzutti
Corrado Barazzutti (; born 19 February 1953, in Udine) is a former tennis player from Italy. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 7, achieved in August 1978. After the end of his player career Barazzutti was a coach (sport), non-playing captain of the Italy Davis Cup team and the Italy Fed Cup team. He was the captain when the Italian team won the Fed Cup (now known as Billie Jean King Cup) four times: 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013. Tomáš Šmíd
Tomáš Šmíd (born 20 May 1956) is a former tennis player from Czechoslovakia, who won nine singles titles during his career. In doubles, he won 54 titles and was world No. 1 in doubles from December 17, 1984, to August 11, 1985. The right-hander reached his highest ATP singles ranking of world No. 11 in July 1984. Šmíd participated in 31 Davis Cup ties for Czechoslovakia from 1977 to 1989, posting a 20–10 record in doubles and a 22–15 record in singles. Šmíd was a part of the winning 1980 Davis Cup team, a team which included Ivan Lendl. Francisco González (born November 19, 1955) played professional tennis in the 1970s and 1980s. He represented Paraguay in Davis Cup and played collegiate tennis at the Ohio State University. Werner Zirngibl (born 4 September 1956) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. Biography A right-handed player, Zirngibl won his first Grand Slam match at the January edition of the 1977 Australian Open, then had to retire during his second round match against Dick Crealy. He managed to win the Belgium International Tennis Championships in 1978 as a qualifier. Following an upset win against top seed Adriano Panatta in the semi-finals, he had a four-set win over Ricardo Cano in the final. Tom Gullikson
Tom Gullikson (born September 8, 1951) is a tennis coach and former professional tennis player born in La Crosse, Wisconsin and raised in Onalaska, Wisconsin in the United States. Career During his career as a player, Gullikson won 15 ATP recognized doubles titles, ten of them partnering with his identical twin brother, Tim Gullikson, who was also a noted coach. Tim coached the then number one player in the world Pete Sampras before Tim was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1995, and died in 1996. A lucky loser is a sports competitor (player or team) who loses a match in a knockout tournament or loses in qualifying, but who then enters the main draw. This can occur when another competitor withdraws during the tournament because of illness, injury, or other reasons, in which case the lucky loser re-enters the competition in place of the withdrawn competitor, or due to the structure of the tournament.
