1978 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship
The 1978 NCAA Division I soccer tournament was the 20th annual tournament organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the national men's college soccer champion among its Division I members in the United States. The final match was played at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida on December 10. San Francisco initially won their fourth national title, defeating Indiana in the final, 2–0. Tampa Stadium
Tampa Stadium (nicknamed The Big Sombrero and briefly known as Houlihan's Stadium) was a large open-air stadium (maximum capacity about 74,000) located in Tampa, Florida, which opened in 1967 and was significantly expanded in 1974–75. The facility is most closely associated with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League, who played there from their establishment in 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season, 1976 until 1997 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season, 1997. It also hosted two Super Bowls, in Super Bowl XVIII, 1984 and Super Bowl XXV, 1991, as well as the 1984 USFL Championship Game. The Santa Clara Broncos men's soccer program represents Santa Clara University in all NCAA Division I men's college soccer competitions. Founded in 1967, the Broncos compete in the West Coast Conference. The Broncos are coached by Cameron Rast, who has coached the program since 2002. The Stanford Cardinal men's soccer team represents Stanford University in all NCAA Division I men's college soccer competitions. The Cardinal play in the ACC. Their first season as a varsity program was in 1973. The Cardinal have appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament 19 times since 1973, including 14 times in the 23 seasons from 1997 to 2019. The UConn Huskies men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of Connecticut. The team is a member of the Big East Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). History Connecticut soccer existed prior to 1969, but was not considered a major sport and did not even have a real stadium. However, in 1969, Joe Morrone was hired as head coach, and made significant changes that would make the Huskies a premiere program. He started by building Connecticut Soccer Stadium, which now bears his name as Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Eventually, in Morrone's words, the team became "the Notre Dame of college soccer". Morrone would ultimately coach the team until he retired in 1994. In 1981, the Huskies won their first NCAA-sanctioned College Cup, defeating Alabama A&M 2–1 in overtime at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. The Vermont Catamounts men's soccer team represents the University of Vermont in all NCAA Division I men's college soccer competitions. The team competes in the America East Conference. The team currently practices at Virtue Field adjacent to Centennial Field on campus.
