1978 European Cup Winners' Cup Final
The 1978 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match contested between Anderlecht of Belgium and Austria Wien of Austria. It was the final match of the 1977–78 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 18th European Cup Winners' Cup final. The final was held at Parc des Princes in Paris, France, on 3 May 1978. The venue was selected in Bern by the UEFA Executive Committee on 20 September 1977. Anderlecht won the match 4–0 thanks to two goals each by Rob Rensenbrink and Gilbert van Binst. It was Anderlecht's third consecutive appearance in the final; they won the competition in 1976 and were runners-up in 1977. 1976 European Cup Winners' Cup Final
The 1976 European Cup Winners' Cup final was a football match between West Ham United of England and Anderlecht of Belgium. The final was held at Heysel Stadium in Brussels on 5 May 1976. It was the final match of the 1975–76 European Cup Winners' Cup tournament and the 16th European Cup Winners' Cup final. Anderlecht won 4–2 against the 1964–65 European Cup Winners' Cup winners to secure their first ever European trophy. Gilbert Van Binst
Gilbert Van Binst (5 July 1951 – 3 January 2025) was a Belgian footballer who played as a defender. Club career Van Binst played for over a decade for Anderlecht, beginning his professional career with the club in 1968. He won numerous domestic and continental honours during his time with the club, most famously scoring two goals in the win over Austria Wien in the 1978 European Cup Winners' Cup Final. He would move to France to play for Toulouse for one season in 1980. He returned to Belgium in 1981, finishing his career by playing for Anderlecht's city rivals Club Brugge. International career Van Binst earned 15 caps for Belgium. He was a part of the squad that finished third at the 1972 European Championships on home soil. Overtime (sports)
Overtime (OT) or extra time (ET) is an additional period of play to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament and replays are not allowed. In association football, a penalty shoot-out (previously known as kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a tie (draw), draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as Overtime (sports)#Association football, extra time (if used) has expired. Away Goals Rule
The away goals rule is a method of tiebreaking in association football and other sports when teams play each other twice, once at each team's home ground. Under the away goals rule, if the total goals scored by each team are equal, the team that has scored more goals " away from home" wins the tiebreaker. This is sometimes expressed by saying that away goals "count double" in the event of a tie, though in practice the team with more away goals is simply recorded as the victor, rather than having additional or 'double' goals added to their total.
