1977–78 Philadelphia 76ers Season
The 1977–78 NBA season was the 76ers 29th season in the NBA and 15th season in Philadelphia. The team finished the regular season with a record of 55–27. Head coach Gene Shue was replaced only 6 games into the season, by former Sixers player Billy Cunningham, who was only 34 years old at the time he replaced Shue. In the playoffs, the Sixers would sweep the New York Knicks, but lose in the Eastern Conference finals to the Washington Bullets, a team with 11 fewer wins, 4 games to 2. Following the season, George McGinnis was traded to the Denver Nuggets for Bobby Jones and World B. Free was dealt to the San Diego Clippers for a 1984 first round draft pick which would become Charles Barkley. Gene Shue
Eugene William Shue (December 18, 1931 – April 3, 2022) was an American professional basketball player and coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shue was one of the top guards of the early days of the NBA and an influential figure in the development of basketball. He is credited with having invented the "spin move" while being an early harbinger of other plays and strategies. Shue was an NBA All-Star in five consecutive times from 1958 to 1962. After his successful playing career, he became a long-serving coach for three franchises. With his first tenure with the Baltimore Bullets, Shue coached the team for seven seasons and won four division championships with five playoff berths, with one trip to the NBA Finals in 1971. He resigned at the end of the 1972-73 season and soon became coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, where he helped the team rise in victories to where they won 50 games and reached the NBA Finals in 1977, where they lost in a six-game series to Portlan ... Glenn Mosley (basketball)
Glenn E. "Smiles" Mosley (born December 26, 1955) is an American former professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Mosley played in the league for just the and seasons and averaged 3.1 points 2.2 rebounds per game. Mosley also played for part of one season in the Continental Basketball Association for the Lancaster Red Roses in 1978, and after his NBA career he played abroad in Italy, France and Argentina. While playing for CSP Limoges in France, Mosley won the Ligue Nationale de Basketball and Korać Cup in 1983. Mosley, from Newark, New Jersey, played college basketball at Seton Hall University in nearby South Orange. He played for the Pirates from 1973–74 to 1976–77 where compiled career totals of 1,441 points and 1,263 rebounds. John Olive
John Olive (born March 1, 1955) is an American former basketball player and coach. Olive attended Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, in Pennsauken, New Jersey, then played collegiate basketball at Villanova University, where he graduated in 1977. Olive was drafted in the eighth round of the 1977 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played in the NBA for the San Diego Clippers from 1978 through 1980. He also played for the Alberta Dusters in the Continental Basketball Association in the 1980–81 season. Olive was an assistant coach at Villanova under Rollie Massimino, from 1985 to 1992. He was named head coach at Loyola Marymount in 1992, where he served for five seasons. Olive is currently the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Torrey Pines High School in Del Mar, California. The University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is a public research university in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a historically black public university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is part of the University of North Carolina system.
