1977 US Open – Women's Singles
Two-time defending champion Chris Evert defeated Wendy Turnbull in the final, 7–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1977 US Open. It was her third US Open (tennis), US Open title and her seventh Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major singles title overall. Chris Evert
Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954) is an American former professional tennis player. One of the most successful players of all time, she was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 260 weeks ( fourth-most of all time), and finished as the year-end No. 1 seven times: 1974-1978, 1980 and 1981. Evert won 157 singles titles, including 18 majors (among which a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles). Alongside Martina Navratilova, her greatest rival, Evert dominated women's tennis from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Tracy Austin
Tracy Ann Austin Holt (born December 12, 1962) is an American former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 21 weeks. Austin won 30 WTA Tour-level singles titles, including two major titles at the 1979 and 1981 US Opens, as well as five doubles titles, including the mixed doubles title at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships, partnering her brother John. Additionally, she won the 1980 WTA Tour Championships and the year-ending 1981 Toyota Championships, both in singles. Austin remains the youngest US Open women's singles champion (aged 16) and the youngest inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at age 29. Sheila McInerney
Sheila McInerney (born February 22, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography McInerney is originally from Rome, New York and began playing tennis at the age of eight. A former student at the Rome Free Academy, she later moved to Miami to further her tennis and attended Palmetto High School. She received a tennis scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC Trojans) in 1976. As an amateur, McInerney qualified for the main draw of the 1977 US Open and made it through to the third round, where she was beaten in three sets by Billie Jean King. In 1978 she partnered with USC teammate Barbara Hallquist to a runner-up finish in the doubles at the U.S. Clay Court Championships. Mary Struthers (born July 21, 1950) is an American former professional tennis player. Mary Carillo (born March 15, 1957) is an American sportscaster and former professional tennis player. She is an analyst for ''Tennis on NBC'' and a reporter for NBC Olympic broadcasts. Career Tennis Carillo played on the women's professional tennis circuit from 1977 to 1980. Her highest world rank was No. 33 in the Women's Tennis Association Rankings from January through March 1980. She then retired, citing knee injuries. Helen Gourlay Cawley (née Gourlay; born 23 December 1946) is a retired tennis player from Australia. Personal Helen Gourlay was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. She married Richard Leon Cawley in January 1977, and married William Timothy Cape in October 1986.
