1976–77 Liverpool F.C. Season
The 1976–77 season was Liverpool F.C., Liverpool Football Club's List of Liverpool F.C. seasons, 85th season in existence and their 15th consecutive season in the Football League First Division, First Division. Liverpool won their tenth The Football League, Football League title after winning it for the second successive season, but lost out to Manchester United in the 1977 FA Cup Final, FA Cup final, their defeat preventing them from becoming the first English club to win three major trophies in the same season. However, four days after their defeat in the FA Cup final, the club won the UEFA European Cup, European Cup for the first time, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–1 at the Stadio Olimpico, Olympic Stadium in Rome. Tommy Smith (footballer, Born 1945)
Thomas Smith (5 April 1945 – 12 April 2019) was an English footballer, who played as a defender at Liverpool for 16 years from 1962 to 1978. Known for his uncompromising defensive style, manager Bill Shankly once said of him: "Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried". A central defender for most of his career, Smith's most memorable moment for the club probably came when he scored Liverpool's second goal in the 1977 European Cup Final against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Phil Neal
Philip George Neal (born 20 February 1951) is an English retired footballer who played for Northampton Town, Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers as a full-back. He is regarded as one of the most successful English players of all time, having won eight First Division titles, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, four European Cups, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup during his eleven years at Liverpool. He later returned to Bolton Wanderers as manager, leading them to victory in the Football League Trophy before spells managing Coventry City, Cardiff City and Manchester City. Alec Lindsay (born 27 February 1948) is an English former association football, footballer who played in the Football League for Bury F.C., Bury, Liverpool F.C., Liverpool and Stoke City F.C., Stoke City. Brian Kettle
Brian Kettle (born 22 April 1956) is an English former footballer who played as a left-back. Kettle began his career with Liverpool, signing professional forms in 1973. He was to remain at Anfield for seven years, but could never rise above reserve level. He was very successful in the reserve team, however, captaining the side for many years, as it won five Central League titles, and three Liverpool Senior Cups. He could never break into the first-team, however, only making four appearances before departing in 1980. He then signed for Wigan Athletic, but was released after one year following a career ending ACL injury after a bad tackle. Joey Jones
Joseph Patrick Jones (born 4 March 1955) is a Welsh former footballer who played as a full-back. Jones most notably played for Liverpool, with whom he won two European Cups. He is also known for his long association with Wrexham, playing for the club in three separate stints, and has been involved in the coaching set-up on-and-off since the early 1990s, including a brief spell as caretaker manager in 2001. Internationally, he represented Wales on 72 occasions from 1975 to 1986. Club career Wrexham Jones was born in Llandudno, and joined Wrexham in 1971. Emlyn Hughes
Emlyn Walter Hughes (28 August 1947 – 9 November 2004) was an English footballer. He started his career at Blackpool in 1964 before moving to Liverpool in 1967. He made 665 appearances for Liverpool and captained the side to three league titles and an FA Cup victory in the 1970s. Added to these domestic honours were two European Cups, including Liverpool's first in 1977; and two UEFA Cup titles. Hughes won the Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1977. Hughes completed a full set of English football domestic honours by winning the League Cup with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1980. In addition to Wolves, he later played for Rotherham United, Hull City, Mansfield Town and Swansea City. Hughes earned 62 caps for the England national team, which he also captained. Raymond Neal Clemence (5 August 1948 – 15 November 2020) was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, he is one of the few players to have made over 1,000 career appearances, and holds the record for the most clean sheets in the history of football (460).
