1976 Wimbledon Championships – Men's Singles
Björn Borg defeated Ilie Năstase in the final, 6–4, 6–2, 9–7 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1976 Wimbledon Championships. It was the first of his five consecutive Wimbledon titles, and his third major title overall. Borg did not lose a set during the tournament, the first man in the Open Era to do so. Arthur Ashe was the defending champion, but lost in the fourth round to Vitas Gerulaitis. Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player. He won three Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, Grand Slam titles in singles and two in doubles. Ashe was the first Black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only Black man ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon, the US Open (tennis), US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980. Ashe was ranked World number 1 ranked male tennis players, world No. 1 by Rex Bellamy, Bud Collins, Judith Elian, Lance Tingay, ''World Tennis'' and ''Tennis Magazine'' (U.S.) in 1975. Jaime Fillol
Jaime José Fillol Durán (born 3 June 1946), known professionally as Jaime Fillol Sr., is a retired professional tennis player from Chile, who played in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Fillol was ranked as high as world No. 14 in singles on the ATP rankings (achieving that ranking on 2 March 1974) and No. 82 in doubles (2 January 1984). In the Open era (after 1968), Fillol won 6 singles titles and 16 doubles titles. In addition he was a founding member and one of the first ATP Presidents. As President of the ATP, Fillol had a passion to create the first pension plan of the ATP and thus it was named after him. Fillol is also a member of the University of Miami "Hall of Fame" where he graduated in 1969. Mark Farrell (6 May 1953 – 26 November 2018) was a British professional tennis player. Career Farrell and Lesley Charles were mixed doubles finalists at the 1974 Wimbledon Championships. In 1974, he was also a losing finalist at a WCT event in London and represented Great Britain in a Davis Cup tie against Iran. He played the doubles rubber with John Lloyd, and they won. Jayakumar Royappa was an Indian professional tennis player. A native of Chennai, Royappa was the son of former Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary E.P. Royappa. Royappa was a national junior hardcourt champion and competed on the professional tour in the 1970s. Mark Edmondson
Mark Edmondson (born 28 June 1954 in Gosford, New South Wales) is a retired Australian professional tennis player. Edmondson won the 1976 Australian Open while ranked 212th in the world, and remains the lowest-ranked winner of a Grand Slam tournament since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973. Raymond J. "Ray" Moore (born 24 August 1946) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. In June 1966 he won the East Gloucestershire Championships at Cheltenham on grass, defeating Tom Okker and Dick Crealy in the final two rounds. Ferdi Taygan (born December 5, 1956) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. He is of Turkish descent. Taygan enjoyed most of his tennis success while playing doubles. During his career, he won 19 doubles titles and finished runner-up an additional 20 times. Partnering with Sherwood Stewart, Taygan won the 1982 French Open doubles title. Charles Manuel Pasarell Jr. (born February 12, 1944) is a Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican-American former tennis player, tennis administrator and founder of the current Indian Wells Open, Indian Wells tournament. John Holladay (born February 24, 1954) is an American former professional tennis player. Born in 1954, Holladay attended La Jolla High School and played in the school tennis team which included future professional players Raúl Ramírez, Chico Hagey and Steve Mott. He went on to play collegiate tennis for the USC Trojans. Holladay, brother of WTA Tour player Terry, had a best singles ranking of 92 on the professional tour and qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon three years in a row, from 1975 to 1977.
