1976 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1976 Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was held in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Landover, Maryland, at the Capital Centre from March 4–6. defeated North Carolina, 67–62, to win the championship. In doing so, Virginia became the first ACC Tournament champion to defeat three teams ranked by the AP poll on their way to the championship. This was the first ACC Tournament to be held outside the state of North Carolina, and only the third time that a team from outside that state won the tournament (Maryland in 1958, South Carolina in 1971). Wally Walker of Virginia was named the tournament MVP. Capital Centre (Landover, Maryland)
The Capital Centre (later USAir Arena and US Airways Arena) was an indoor arena in the eastern United States, located in Landover, Maryland, a suburb east of Washington, D.C. Opened in late 1973, it closed in 1999, and was demolished in 2002. The seating capacity was 18,756 for basketball and 18,130 for hockey. The elevation at street level was approximately above sea level. 1971 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1971 Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was held in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Greensboro Coliseum from March 11–13. South Carolina defeated North Carolina, 52–51, to win the championship. This was the only ACC Tournament that South Carolina won and the last ACC Tournament in which they played. Lee Dedmon of North Carolina and John Roche of South Carolina tied as tournament MVPs. In the final, 6'3" Kevin Joyce out-jumped 6"10" Dedmon with seconds remaining to tap the ball to Tom Owens, who was left alone under the basket. Owens made the layup to give South Carolina the win as time expired. AP Poll
The Associated Press poll (AP poll) provides weekly rankings of the top 25 NCAA teams in one of three Division I college sports: football, men's basketball and women's basketball. The rankings are compiled by polling 62 sportswriters and broadcasters from across the nation. Each voter provides their own ranking of the top 25 teams, and the individual rankings are then combined to produce the national ranking by giving a team 25 points for a first place vote, 24 for a second place vote, and so on down to 1 point for a twenty-fifth place vote. Ballots of the voting members in the AP poll are made public.
