1975–76 Rangers F.C. Season
The 1975–76 season was the 96th season of competitive football by Rangers. Overview Rangers played a total of 55 competitive matches during the 1975–76 season. The club won a third domestic treble in its history and, what would become, the first of two in three seasons. This was the first season of the new Scottish Premier Division and the previous season's league flag was hoisted much to the delight of the home support in front of the visitors who just happened to be Celtic. A tense match ensued and although the visitors took the lead, Derek Johnstone equalised and Quinton Young netted the winner. The side did not continue this good form and only won five, and lost five, of the next fourteen league matches. On 13 December the club embarked on a 26 match unbeaten run in the league and cup competitions. Alex MacDonald (footballer Born 1948)
Alexander MacDonald (born 17 March 1948 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former professional football player and manager. MacDonald played for St Johnstone, Rangers and Hearts. He also played in one full international match for Scotland, in 1976. Towards the end of his playing career, MacDonald became player/manager of Hearts. He led the team as they won promotion in 1983, then narrowly missed out on winning the Scottish league championship in 1986. MacDonald then managed Airdrieonians for most of the 1990s, leading the team to Scottish Cup finals in 1992 and 1995. Playing career Club career MacDonald started his career with St Johnstone but was snapped up by Rangers in November 1968 for £65,000. He quickly became a fans favourite at Ibrox as he demonstrated his passion for the blue jersey. Johnny Hamilton (footballer, Born 1949)
Johnny Hamilton (10 July 1949 – 17 October 2015) was a Scottish professional football player who is best known for his time with Rangers F.C., Rangers and Hibernian F.C., Hibernian. Hamilton began his career with Cumbernauld United F.C., Cumbernauld United before moving on to Hibernian F.C., Hibernian in 1969. He joined Rangers F.C., Rangers four years later. Hamilton also had spells with Millwall F.C., Millwall and St Johnstone F.C., St Johnstone. Hamilton died in October 2015, aged 66. John Greig
John Greig (born 11 September 1942) is a Scottish former professional footballer, who played as a defender. He spent his entire career with Rangers, as a player, manager and director. Greig was voted "The Greatest Ever Ranger" in 1999 by the club's supporters, and has been elected to Rangers' Hall of Fame. Playing career Youth Greig played his youth football with United Crossroads Boys Club in Edinburgh, under the supervision of Eric Gardiner, and supported Hearts as a boy. It is unknown if Hearts showed any interest in signing him. Bob McAuley signed Greig for Rangers and despite his initial reluctance Greig did as instructed by his father. Graham Fyfe (footballer, Born 1951)
Graham Fyfe (18 August 1951 – 19 April 2022) was a Scottish professional footballer, best known for his time with Rangers, who played as a winger. Career Fyfe made his first appearance for Rangers at Ibrox in league match against Heart of Midlothian on 25 March 1969. He started on the right wing in a 3–2 home win. He went on to make 70 appearances for the club, including the first match against Ajax in the first ever European Super Cup. Fyfe also scored 23 goals which was not bad at all from a midfielder. He left to join Hibernian after seven seasons in Govan, but his stay in Edinburgh was short lived, as he moved on to Dumbarton the following year. He played at Boghead Park for two seasons before moving to the US to play with Major Indoor Soccer League sides Pittsburgh Spirit and Cleveland Force. Tom Forsyth
Thomas Forsyth (23 January 1949 – 14 August 2020) was a Scottish football player and coach. Forsyth played as a defender for Motherwell, Rangers and Scotland. Playing career Club Forsyth started his career at junior club Stonehouse Violet, then spent five years at Motherwell, playing over 200 times for the club before being signed by Rangers in October 1972. He scored the winning goal in the 1973 Scottish Cup Final against Old Firm rivals Celtic from six inches. During his Rangers career, Forsyth made 332 appearances in all competitions and won three league championships, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups; these successes included two domestic trebles, in 1975–76 and 1977–78. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Ally Dawson
Alistair John Dawson (25 February 1958 – 26 July 2021) was a Scottish professional football defender who spent most of his career at Rangers. In 2011, Dawson was inducted into Rangers' Hall of Fame. Playing career Dawson was signed as a sixteen-year-old in 1975 by manager Jock Wallace Jr. and made his debut in a pre-season tour in Canada. He was a full back who could play on either side of the pitch. He sustained a serious injury during a club tour of Canada, when he fractured his skull. He recovered, and became a centre back. He made a total of 316 appearances for Rangers, scoring eight goals. Gordon Boyd (born 27 March 1958) is a Scottish former professional footballer who is best known for his time with Rangers. Career Boyd played for amateur boys clubs Glasgow United AFC and Eastercraigs AFC before he was signed by Rangers as a 12-year-old in 1970. He became the youngest ever player to sign Scottish Football Association schoolboy forms for Rangers. An under 15 Scottish schoolboy international, in 1974-75 Boyd played for the Scotland under-18 team in a European Championship match against Denmark at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock.
