The 1973–74 Marquette Warriors men's basketball team represented Marquette University in NCAA Division I men's competition in the 1973–74 academic year. At that time, Marquette was an independent school not aligned with any conference; it did not join a conference until 1988, when it joined the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, now known as the Horizon League; it would later move to the Great Midwest Conference and Conference USA before joining its current conference, the Big East, in 2005. Al McGuire
Alfred James McGuire (September 7, 1928 – January 26, 2001) was an American college basketball coach and broadcaster, the head coach at Marquette University from 1964 to 1977. He won a national championship in his final season at Marquette, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992. He was also well known as a longtime national television basketball broadcaster and for his colorful personality. Early life McGuire played three years of basketball at St. John's Prep, then located in Brooklyn, New York (graduated 1947), and went on to star at St. John's University (1947–1951), where he played for four years and captained the 1951 team that posted a mark and finished third in the NIT. The 1974 NCAA Division I Basketball Championship Game was the finals of the 1974 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament and it determined the national champion for the 1973-74 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.
