1973 Kings Cross Strippers' Strike
The 1973 Kings Cross strippers' strike was a strike among strippers working in clubs in the Sydney, Australia suburb of Kings Cross. Strippers went on strike from October to December 1973 over poor wages and working conditions and the sackings of workers who protested. The strippers received some support from the wider trade union movement, and emerged successful, with the reinstatement of striking workers and improved wages and working conditions. In October 1973, a number of strippers at two major Kings Cross strip clubs, the Pink Panther and the Staccato, joined the Actors Equity union. Janine Gair, a stripper who had been a union member for several years, discovered that the union had agreed to accept strippers and encouraged her colleagues to join. John Ducker
John Patrick Ducker AO (29 March 1932 – 25 November 2005), Australian labour leader and politician, played a leading role in the Australian labour movement and the Labor Party for 20 years. Background Ducker was born in Kingston upon Hull, in northern England, the son of a bus driver, and worked on the docks from the age of 14. He migrated to Australia with his family in 1950, and became an ironworker and active in the Federated Ironworkers Association, at that time controlled by the Communist Party of Australia. He was originally the minutes secretary in 1952, becoming an organiser from the Sydney branch from 1952-1959. He joined the Labor party in 1952. Neville Wran
Neville Kenneth Wran, (11 October 1926 – 20 April 2014) was an Australian politician who was the Premier of New South Wales from 1976 to 1986. He was the national president of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 1980 to 1986 and chairman of both the Lionel Murphy Foundation and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) from 1986 to 1991. Green Ban
A green ban is a form of strike action, usually taken by a trade union or other organised labour group, which is conducted for environmentalist or conservationist purposes. They mainly took place in Australia during the 1970s, led by the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) and used to protect parkland, low-income housing and buildings with historical significance. At times, industrial action was used in relation to other issues, such as when a ' pink ban' was placed on Macquarie University due to the expulsion of Jeremy Fisher, a gay man, from student housing. Builders Labourers Federation
The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) was an Australian trade union that existed from 1911 until 1972, and from 1976 until 1986, when it was permanently deregistered in various Australian states by the federal Hawke Labor government and some state governments of the time. This occurred in the wake of a Royal Commission into corruption by the union. About the same time, BLF federal secretary Norm Gallagher was jailed for corrupt dealings after receiving bribes from building companies that he used to build a beach house. Social and economic justice The BLF fought successful campaigns which became known as the green bans against development projects which it viewed as harmful to the built and natural environment of Sydney and Melbourne.
