1973 French Open – Women's Doubles
Margaret Court and Virginia Wade defeated defending champion Betty Stöve and her partner Françoise Dürr in the final, 6–2, 6–3 to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 1973 French Open. Billie Jean King and Stöve were the reigning champions, but King did not competed this year. This marked the first women's doubles major appearance of future record 31-time women's doubles major champion and world No. 1 Martina Navratilova. Partnering Renáta Tomanová, they lost in the quarterfinals to Rosie Darmon and Mariana Simionescu. Margaret Court (''née'' Smith; born 16 July 1942), also known as Margaret Smith Court, is an Australian former world number 1 tennis player and a Christian minister. Her 24 women's singles major titles and total of 64 major titles (including 19 major women's doubles and 21 major mixed doubles titles) are the most in tennis history. Court was born in Albury, New South Wales. In 1960, aged 17, she won the first of seven consecutive Australian Open singles titles. She completed the career Grand Slam in singles aged 21 with her victory at Wimbledon in 1963. Taking a brief hiatus in 1966 and 1967, Court played as an amateur until the advent of the Open Era in 1968. Wendy Gilchrist (born 17 May 1950) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. From 1972 she competed as Wendy Paish following her marriage to British Davis Cup player John Paish. Marilyn Lawrence (née Pryde; born 15 May 1952) is a former New Zealand professional tennis player. Tennis career Pryde won her first national championship in 1968 as a 15-year old and made her debut for the New Zealand Federation Cup team in 1970, going on to feature in eight ties. Nathalie Fuchs
Nathalie Fuchs (born 3 September 1952) is a French former professional tennis player. A right-handed player from Paris, Fuchs competed on the professional tour in the 1970s. She was the winner of the 1974 Spanish Championships and played 11 ties for the France Federation Cup team. Fuchs made the third round of the French Open on three occasions, including in 1974 when she had an upset win over second seed Virginia Wade. She also partnered with Wanaro N'Godrella in the mixed doubles event in 1974 and reached the semi-finals, which was her best grand slam performance. In the 1975 Federation Cup she remained unbeaten in her singles rubbers up until France's semi-final loss to Czechoslovakia. She had played an important role in the quarter-final win over Great Britain, with her victory against Sue Barker levelling the tie, which was won by France in the doubles. Erzsébet Széll (born 7 December 1945) is a Hungarian former professional tennis player. A five-time national doubles champion, Széll was active on tour in the 1960s and 1970s. Széll won a bronze medal in singles at the 1965 Summer Universiade and reached the third round of the 1967 French Championships. Wendy Turnbull, (born 26 November 1952) is an Australian retired tennis player. During her career, she won nine Grand Slam titles, four of them in women's doubles and five of them in mixed doubles.
