The League of Ireland is a national association football Sports league, league consisting of professional clubs in the Republic of Ireland and Derry, Derry City in Northern Ireland. It is governed by the Football Association of Ireland. It was the name of the top-level football league in the Republic of Ireland from its foundation in 1921–22 League of Ireland, 1921 until the introduction of a second division in 1985. There are three divisions in the league – the League of Ireland Premier Division, Premier Division, the League of Ireland First Division, First Division and the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division, Women's Premier Division. The league has always worked closely with the FAI, with which it formally merged in 2006. The league is currently sponsored by SSE Airtricity, and as such is known as the SSE Airtricity League for sponsorship reasons. Athlone Town A
Athlone (; ) is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree. It is the second most populous town in the Midlands Region with a population of 22,869 in the 2022 census. Carl Davenport
Carl Davenport (born 30 May 1944) is an English former footballer who played as a centre forward in the Football League for Stockport County. He played non-league football in England before enjoying a successful career in the League of Ireland. He also appeared on Love in the countryside. Life and career Born in Farnworth, which was then in Lancashire, Davenport was on the books of Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End, without making a league appearance for either, before joining Stockport. He then played for Cheshire League clubs Wigan Athletic and Macclesfield Town. Turlough O'Connor (footballer)
Turlough O'Connor (born 22 July 1946) is an Irish former footballer and manager. He is a member of the Bohemians Hall of Fame. His two brothers Padraig O'Connor and Michael O'Connor also played for Athlone Town. Playing career He has spells as player at Limerick F.C., where he made a scoring debut in a League of Ireland Shield game at Sligo on 25 August 1963, Bohemians, Fulham, Bohemians again, Dundalk and Athlone Town. He made 191 league appearances (scoring 120 times) and 15 appearances in European competition for Bohs (scoring 1 goal) against Rangers in the European Cupbr> He was top scorer in the League of Ireland in 1973/74 and 1977/78. Miah Dennehy
Jeremiah Dennehy (29 March 1950 – 10 November 2023) was an Irish footballer whose teams included Cork Hibernians, Nottingham Forest, Walsall and Bristol Rovers. In 1972, he became the first-ever player to score a hat-trick in an FAI Cup final. Career Cork Hibernians Dennehy was signed for Cork Hibernians in 1969 by manager Amby Fogarty. However it was under Fogarty's successor, Dave Bacuzzi, that he became a prominent member of the successful Hibs team of the early 1970s. Other members of team included John Herrick. Dennehy helped Hibs win several trophies including the League of Ireland title in 1971, scoring twice in the play-off decider against Shamrock Rovers. In 1972, he also scored a hat-trick in the FAI Cup final as he helped Hibs defeat Waterford United. This was the first ever hat-trick in an FAI Cup final. Terry Harkin
John Terence Harkin (born 14 September 1941) is a Northern Irish former professional footballer who played as a forward. He scored 125 goals in 260 league games in nine seasons in the Football League. He also scored 66 goals in 142 games in the League of Ireland and scored five goals in 11 North American Soccer League games. At the international level, he made five appearances, scoring two goals for the Northern Ireland national team. He began his career with Derry City and Coleraine, before winning a £2,000 move to Port Vale in September 1962. He was sold on to Crewe Alexandra for £3,000 in June 1964 and scored a club record 35 goals in 1964–65. He moved on to Cardiff City in August 1965 before switching to Notts County the following year. He was sold on to Southport for £2,000 the next year before being transferred to Shrewsbury Town in March 1969. He returned to Ireland in 1971 to play for Finn Harps. Brendan Bradley (born 7 June 1950) is an Irish former footballer. He holds the record for the highest number of goals, 235, scored by an individual in the League of Ireland with a club record 181 for Finn Harps Career Derry City A talented youngster, appearing in the Derry and District League at the age of 15, Bradley signed for Derry City at the age of sixteen. Although a regular in the club's reserve team he only made a handful of first team appearances during his three seasons with the club; his route to the first team being blocked by the form of regular striker Danny Hale.
