1970–71 Portland Trail Blazers Season
The 1970–71 Portland Trail Blazers season was the inaugural season of the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In their first regular season game on October 16, 1970, they beat the fellow expansion Cleveland Cavaliers 115–112, with 4,273 people in attendance. The Trail Blazers played a regular season home game at McArthur Court in Eugene, Oregon on February 19, 1971, against the Cincinnati Royals. Portland was defeated by Cincinnati, 102–109. Rolland Todd
Rolland Douglas Todd (born April 26, 1934) is a former player and coach in the National Basketball Association, and a former player in the American Basketball League (1961–63), American Basketball League, who also coached basketball at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He was the first coach of the then-expansion Portland Trail Blazers, leading the team to a 29–53 record in its inaugural season (best of the three expansion clubs who entered the NBA that year); though was let go the next season when the team failed to improve. NBA Rookie Of The Year Award
The National Basketball Association's Rookie of the Year is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the top rookie(s) of the regular season. Initiated following the 1952–53 NBA season, it confers the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, named after the former Philadelphia Warriors head coach. Rhode Island Rams Men's Basketball
The Rhode Island Rams men's basketball team is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference. Claude English
Claude W. English (born December 26, 1946) is an American former professional basketball player and collegiate coach. He spent one season in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Portland Trail Blazers during their inaugural 1970–71 season. He was drafted by the Blazers in the seventh round (110 pick overall) during the 1970 NBA draft from the University of Rhode Island. English played in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) for the Hartford Capitols and Cherry Hill Pros from 1971 to 1975. He won an EBA championship with the Capitols in 1974. The Dayton Flyers men's basketball team is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) representing the University of Dayton in Ohio. Ronald Eugene Knight (born August 4, 1947) is a retired American professional basketball forward who spent two seasons in the National Basketball Association both with the Portland Trail Blazers. He was a member of the inaugural 1970–71 Blazers team after being drafted in the fifth round (76th pick overall) during the 1970 NBA draft. Jim Penix
Jim Penix is an American retired basketball player, known for his college career at Bowling Green State University, where in 1970 he was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. Penix came from Rossford, Ohio, where he attended 17 different schools as his father's job as a construction foreman required the family to move frequently. He starred at Rossford High School, leading the team to the 1966 Ohio class A state final. He averaged 23.9 points per game that season and was named first-team All-State. Following his high school career, he followed his high school coach, Cot Marquette to junior college Penta Tech (now Owens Community College), where in his two-year career he averaged 28.5 points per game. Walt Gilmore
Walt Gilmore (born February 27, 1947) is an American former basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted in the second round of the 1970 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers and would play one season with the team. Portland head coach Rolland Todd said of Gilmore, "Physical strength and speed are his assets. He does lack the background of having had to do a variety of things in college." Gilmore's agent, Leo Zinn, claimed to negotiate a $300,000 salary on behalf of his client. The Trail Blazers placed Gilmore on waivers on September 27, 1971.
