1970 NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament
The 1970 NCAA men's volleyball tournament was the first annual tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA men's college volleyball. The tournament was played at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. UCLA defeated Long Beach State in the championship match (3 sets to 0) to win their first national title. UCLA's Dane Holtzman was named ''Most Outstanding Player'' of the tournament. Qualification Until the creation of the NCAA Men's Division III Volleyball Championship in 2012, there was only a single national championship for men's volleyball. UCLA Bruins Men's Volleyball
The UCLA men's volleyball program represents the University of California, Los Angeles in the sport of men's volleyball as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). UCLA played its first season in 1953 and has won a record 21 NCAA men's volleyball tournament, NCAA titles. Al Scates had been the head coach each year since 1963 until his retirement after the 2012 season. John Speraw took over as head coach after Scates’ retirement. After the 2024 season, Speraw left the program to become the president and CEO of USA Volleyball. John Hawks, who was previously an assistant coach for the Bruins from 2015-2022, would return as the team’s head coach. The NCAA Division III men's volleyball tournament is the annual tournament organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the main governing body for U.S. college sports United States, to determine the national champions of collegiate indoor volleyball among its Division III members. It has been held every year since 2012, except for 2020 (this was the newest NCAA championship from 2012 to 2016, when a beach volleyball championship was ended. Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament
The NCAA men's volleyball tournament, officially titled the NCAA national collegiate men's volleyball championship, is an annual competition that determines the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship in American college men's volleyball. It had been the only NCAA championship in the sport from 1970 until 2012, when the NCAA launched a NCAA Division III men's volleyball tournament, Division III championship. Unlike most NCAA sports, men's volleyball uses a modified version of the National Collegiate championship format, which means NCAA Division I, Division I and NCAA Division II, Division II teams compete against each other in the same tournament. NCAA Division II
NCAA Division II (D-II) is the intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. Before 1973, the NCAA's smaller schools were grouped together in the College Division. In 1973, the College Division split in two when the NCAA began using numeric designations for its competitions. Pauley Pavilion
Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located in the Westwood Village district of Los Angeles, California, on the campus of UCLA. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball and women's gymnastics teams also compete here. All teams, except for the men's volleyball team, compete in the Big Ten Conference. The building, designed by architect Welton Becket, was dedicated in June 1965, named for University of California Regent Edwin W. Pauley, who had matched the alumni contributions. Pauley donated almost one fifth of the more than $5 million spent in constructing the arena.
