1963 O'Byrne Cup
The 1963 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football tournament contested by the county teams of Leinster GAA. It was the 10th staging of the competition that was first held in 1954, with the aim of starting a fund for injured footballers. Louth won the competition after defeating Longford in the final, played at the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda. Format The tournament was contested on a knockout basis. First-round byes were awarded to Dublin, Louth, Meath and Westmeath. O'Byrne Cup
The Bord na Móna O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic football competition organised by the Leinster GAA and first staged in 1954. The competition is named after Matt Byrne, a former Wicklow GAA club and county officer. By virtue of a quirk in translation, the Corn Uí Bhroin became known as the O'Byrne cup even though Matt had never used an 'O' in his surname. Byrne was born on February 14, 1870, was a native of Baltinglass and taught at the local national school on Chapel Hill. Deeply involved in GAA activities at any levels throughout his life, he was regarded as a good footballer in his youth as well as an excellent handballer. He was the first secretary of the Maurice Davins' club in Baltinglass and served as a member of the Wicklow County Board for over 50 years, mostly as county registrar. He was also his county's representative on Leinster and Central Councils and served as President of the Irish Handball Council from 1941-1944. He died on September 21, 1947. Longford County Football Team
The Longford county football team represents Longford in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Longford GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Leinster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. Longford's home ground is Pearse Park, Longford. The team's manager is Paddy Christie. The team last won the Leinster Senior Championship in 1968 and the National League in 1966. The ''Longford Leader'' is a weekly newspaper, which has published in Longford, Ireland since 1897. History The Longford Leader was founded, as ''The Longford Leader and Roscommon, Leitrim and Westmeath News'', as a local newspaper with a Nationalist perspective, in 1897, by local activist and M.P., J.
