1962–63 Liverpool F.C. Season
The 1962–63 season was the 71st season in Liverpool F.C.'s existence and their first season back in the Football League's First Division since 1953–54. Roger Hunt, who had scored 41 goals in the promotion winning league campaign, proved himself in the top flight and scored 24 goals, as Liverpool finished in 8th position in the league, and also reached the semi finals of the FA Cup. Liverpool F
Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. With a population of in 2019, it is the 10th largest English district by population and its metropolitan area is the fifth largest in the United Kingdom, with a population of 2.24 million. Ronnie Moran
Ronald Moran (28 February 1934 – 22 March 2017) was a Liverpool captain and coach who twice served as caretaker manager in the early 1990s. Having spent his entire playing career at the club, he then became a member of the Boot Room coaching staff with Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Reuben Bennett, and was the club's longest-serving employee when he retired in 1998. Moran died on 22 March 2017, at the age of 83, as a Liverpool legend. Full-time player Moran was born in Crosby, Liverpool, and began his footballing career at Liverpool playing with the 'C' team while working as an apprentice electrician. Originally a left back, Moran signed professional terms for manager Don Welsh in January 1952 and subsequently made his debut in a 3–2 defeat at Derby County on 22 November 1952, at the age of 18 years. Alf Arrowsmith
Alf Arrowsmith (11 December 1942 – 12 May 2005) was an English footballer who played as a striker. Arrowsmith began his career in non-league football with Tintwistle Villa. The talented player made his mark scoring a massive 96 goals in the 1959–60 season - a club record which remains unbeaten today. He moved to Ashton United where he played alongside future England star Alan Ball and within weeks was spotted by an Anfield scout and signed for Liverpool in 1960 for £1500. Although he made his debut for the club the following year it was during the 1963–64 season that he really came to prominence, scoring fifteen goals in 20 league games. However a bad injury suffered in the 1964 FA Charity Shield derailed Arrowsmith's career and he never recaptured the same form again, leaving to join Bury in 1968, before finishing his career at Rochdale and Macclesfield Town. Johnny Wheeler
John Edward Wheeler (26 July 1928 – 15 November 2019) was an English professional footballer. He played for Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool and New Brighton. Club career Wheeler played club football for Carlton, Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool and New Brighton. Gordon Wallace (English Footballer)
Gordon Wallace (born 13 June 1944 in Lanark) is a Scottish former footballer, who played for Liverpool during the 1960s. Career Wallace was raised in Wales after his father Dougie, also a footballer, transferred to Llanelli Town in 1949. Gordon attended school with future rugby union star Barry John and had trials with Huddersfield Town while Bill Shankly was the Yorkshire club's manager. Shankly moved to Liverpool in late 1959, and soon brought in the teenage Wallace as an apprentice. During his spell at Anfield, his main claims to fame were netting the opening goal in the 1964 FA Charity Shield, scoring twice in a match covered on the very first BBC "Match of the Day" programme, and being Liverpool's first ever European Champions' Cup goalscorer (the first goal in an away tie against KR Reykjavík), all occurring in August 1964. William Stevenson (born 26 October 1939) is a Scottish former professional football player and manager. He played for Rangers, Liverpool, Stoke City, Tranmere Rovers and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Gordon Milne
Gordon Milne (born 29 March 1937) is an English former football player and manager. Personal life Gordon Milne was born in Preston, Lancashire, England and is the son of the Scottish former Preston player Jimmy Milne and Jesse Milne. Club career Milne had a successful playing career with amateur side Morecambe, Preston North End, Liverpool (1960–1967), Blackpool (1967–1970) and Wigan Athletic (1970). He was one of Bill Shankly's first signings, when he moved from Preston North End for £16,000 in August 1960. Jimmy Melia
James Melia (born 1 November 1937) is an English former footballer who spent most of his career playing for Liverpool and went on to become a manager. Playing career Liverpool Melia joined the Reds straight from St. Anthony's School as a 15-year-old, when manager Don Welsh saw the potential in the young schoolboy international's feet. Melia signed professional forms on his 17th birthday, 1 November 1954. After 23 appearances for Liverpool's reserve team, Melia made his début aged 18 on 17 December 1955 at Anfield in a 2nd Division fixture against Nottingham Forest. The visitors came up against an in form Billy Liddell who scored a hat-trick in the 5–2 victory, Jimmy also scored his first goal for the club in the 48th minute, John Evans got the other. Tommy Leishman
Thomas Leishman (3 September 1937 – 21 July 2021) was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as a wing-half. Life and playing career Born in Stenhousemuir, Scotland, Leishman played for St Mirren before Liverpool signed him for £10,000 on 20 November 1959. He made his debut a month later in a 2–0 2nd Division win over Charlton Athletic at Anfield. His first goal came in the 11th minute of a league match at The Dell on 24 August 1960, unfortunately it turned out to be a consolation as the Saints hit 4 past the Reds backline. Leishman, like new manager Bill Shankly, joined Liverpool in November 1959 from St Mirren, where he had won a Scottish Cup winners medal the previous May, St Mirren having beaten Aberdeen 3–1 in the Hampden Park final. Ian Callaghan
Ian Robert Callaghan MBE (born 10 April 1942) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He holds the record for most appearances for Liverpool. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1975 New Year Honours. Playing career Liverpool Callaghan played 857 times for Liverpool between 1960 and 1978, breaking into the first team just after the appointment of Bill Shankly as Liverpool manager. He made his debut on 16 April 1960 at Anfield in a 4–0 victory over Bristol Rovers. Alan A'Court
Alan A'Court (30 September 1934 – 14 December 2009) was an English footballer who mostly played for Liverpool. He gained five caps for England and represented the nation at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Playing career Born in Rainhill, Lancashire, England, A'Court was a winger who started out at Prescot Cables as an amateur before he was signed by Reds manager Don Welsh. A'Court made his debut in a league match at Ayresome Park on 7 February 1953, a game that saw Liverpool take both the points from a 3–2 win.
