League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland is a national association football Sports league, league consisting of professional clubs in the Republic of Ireland and Derry, Derry City in Northern Ireland. It is governed by the Football Association of Ireland. It was the name of the top-level football league in the Republic of Ireland from its foundation in 1921–22 League of Ireland, 1921 until the introduction of a second division in 1985. There are three divisions in the league – the League of Ireland Premier Division, Premier Division, the League of Ireland First Division, First Division and the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division, Women's Premier Division. The league has always worked closely with the FAI, with which it formally merged in 2006. The league is currently sponsored by SSE Airtricity, and as such is known as the SSE Airtricity League for sponsorship reasons. 1963–64 European Cup
The 1963–64 European Cup was the ninth season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Inter Milan, who beat Real Madrid 3–1 in the final at Praterstadion, Vienna, on 27 May 1964. Inter's triumph ensured that Italy became the first country and Milan became the first city with two competition winners. AC Milan were the defending champions, but were eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. Cyprus entered its champion for the first time this season. Teams A total of 31 teams participated in the competition. Italy were represented by two clubs, with Milan qualifying as title holders and Inter Milan as Italian champions. CSKA Red Flag wasn't participating after spell of seven editions, with only ever-present Real Madrid having more appearances in the competition. Donal Leahy
Donal Leahy (31 August 1938 – 31 December 2015) was an Irish footballer recognised for his role as a wing-half. He is chiefly remembered for his time with his hometown club, Evergreen United. Career Leahy made his debut on 15 September 1956, scoring in a match against Shamrock Rovers at Glenmalure Park, which ended in a 3–1 loss for Evergreen in the League of Ireland Shield. Leahy gained attention from Evergreen after a notable performance for Munster Youths against West Germany Youths at The Mardyke in May 1956. He opted to stay in Cork rather than move to Aston Villa or Blackburn in 1957. Under manager Tommy Moroney, Leahy was repositioned as a striker, a move that resulted in him being the top scorer in the League of Ireland for three consecutive seasons from 1956–57 to 1958–59. Ben Hannigan
Ben Hannigan (3 September 1943 – 4 February 2021) was an Irish footballer who played as an inside forward. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland. Career Hannigan had three different spells with Shelbourne as a player from 1961 to 1966, 1972–74, and finally in the 1980–81 season. His first spell was the most successful as Shels won the league championship in 1962 after defeating Cork Celtic in a play-off and then defeating Cork Hibernians in the following year's FAI Cup final. In December 1965 he signed for Wrexham but was soon back home with Dundalk where he won the League in 1967. He scored over 50 goals for the Oriel Park side. Hannigan then signed for Shamrock Rovers in April 1969 and made his debut on 6 April. He won the FAI Cup in his first season and represented Rovers twice in European competition against Schalke 04. Austin Noonan
Austin Noonan (16 July 1933 – 7 November 2022) was an Irish football player and manager who played for Cork Celtic and Cork Hibernians in the League of Ireland. He also served as manager of Cork Hibernians. Career Noonan first played football as a schoolboy with Maymount. Considered too small and light as a youth player, he later played with Colmcille's and Ballinlough before being selected on the Cork AUL. Noonan signed for Evergreen United (later Cork Celtic) for the 1953–54 season. He formed a close goal-scoring partnership with Donie Leahy and, after spending much of the 1958-59 season on the sideline with a troublesome right ankle injury, was the league's overall top scorer with 27 goals the following season. Noonan was honoured by the League of Ireland XI selectors on a couple of occasions, while his other honours include Top Four Cup, Shield, Dublin City Cup and Munster Senior Cup winners' medals. Eric Barber (Irish Footballer)
Eric Barber (18 January 1942 – 20 August 2014) was an Irish professional footballer. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland with whom he had three spells from 1958 to 1966, 1971–75 and 1978–80, managing them during the 1979–80 season. Player Professional During his time with Shels, Barber scored a club record 126 league goals. He was part of Shels FAI Youth Cup-winning side in 1959 and went on to win the League of Ireland championship in 1962, and the FAI Cup in 1960 and 1963, beating Cork Hibernians 2–0 on both occasions. Barber scored in every round including the final in the 1960 cup win and in the 1962 cup final defeat to Shamrock Rovers. His goal in the 1960 final was a lob from almost forty yards. In March 1966, Barber signed for Birmingham City, but never became a regular. Jimmy Hasty
James Hasty (1936 – 11 October 1974) was a Northern Irish footballer who is best known for his time playing as a forward for Dundalk between 1960 and 1966. He was nicknamed 'the One-Armed Wonder' because he had lost his left arm in a workplace accident prior to his career in football. He was murdered in a sectarian killing in Belfast in October 1974 during the Troubles. Early life Jimmy Hasty was born in Belfast in 1936 and was raised in the Sailortown area of the city. In July 1950, when he was 14 years old, he lost his left arm in an industrial accident on his first day at work at Jennymount Mill in Belfast. He later received £1,200 in compensation. Career Hasty played for several junior football clubs in the Belfast area during the late 1950s, before joining Newry Town in the Irish League second tier in October 1959. Jackie Mooney
Jackie Mooney (1938 – 30 December 2017) was an Irish soccer player during the 1960s and 1970s. Mooney played for Shamrock Rovers, Athlone Town and Bohemians amongst others during his career in the League of Ireland. Club career Jackie was spotted playing for Home Farm by Billy Behan in 1955 and joined Manchester United. After 3 years at the club however, Mooney left Old Trafford without making the breakthrough. He had short spells at Bangor City and Cork Hibernians before signing for Shamrock Rovers where he made a scoring debut, against Shels in Dalymount Park on 22 August 1962. He scored for Rovers in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup against Valencia C.F. in the Estadio Mestalla in 1963.
