1961–62 S.L. Benfica Season
The 1961–62 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 58th season in existence and the club's 28th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football, covering the period from 1 August 1961 to 31 July 1962. Benfica competed domestically in the Primeira Divisão and Taça de Portugal, and participated in the European Cup after winning the competition in the previous season. As the reigning European Cup holders, they represented the continent in the Intercontinental Cup. In the third year of Béla Guttmann's stint, Benfica had a slow transfer market, only noted addition was António Simões. The season did not start in the best of ways, with the team losing the Intercontinental Cup and suffering a blip in performance that saw him trail leaders by five points before December. Maurício Vieira De Brito
Maurício Vieira de Brito (6 March 1919 – 9 August 1975) was a Portuguese businessman who served as the 21st president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. Born in Novo Redondo, he served as president of Benfica between 30 March 1957 and 31 March 1962, succeeding Joaquim Ferreira Bogalho. Vieira de Brito was arguably the person who financed Benfica the most, during and after his term; with his own money, he made improvements to the original Estádio da Luz: illumination of the stadium, in 1958, and the first stage of the construction of the third tier, known as ''Terceiro Anel'', in 1960. This year, he was awarded the Águia de Ouro (Golden Eagle) by the club. Under Vieira de Brito's presidency, Benfica hired football coach Béla Guttmann in 1959 and footballer Eusébio in 1960. O Clássico ("The Classic") is the name given in football to matches between Portuguese clubs S.L. Benfica and FC Porto. Originally, the term ''O Clássico'' only referred to games played in the league, but now tends to include matches that take place in other domestic competitions such as the Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Taça de Honra (Honour Cup) is a Portuguese friendly football tournament played between teams of the Lisbon Football Association (AFL). It is the third oldest competition in Portugal after the championships of Lisbon and Porto. The format has varied, and before the 1959–60 season, the trophy was mostly given to the winner of the Lisbon championship. Afterwards, it was played as a four-team elimination tournament during pre-season, between the best-placed Lisbon teams in championships disputed in the previous season. The 1960–61 Primeira Divisão was the 27th season of top-tier football in Portugal. Overview The competition was contested by 14 teams with S.L. Benfica winning the 1960–61 Primeira Divisão championship. It was the eleventh championship title for the club. Benfica also won the 1961–62 European Cup and qualified for the 1961–62 competition. The 1960–61 European Cup was the sixth season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament.
