1960–61 Colchester United F.C. Season
The 1960–61 season was Colchester United's 19th season in their history and their eleventh season in the third tier of English football, the Third Division. Alongside competing in the Third Division, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the new League Cup competition. Colchester reached the second round in both cups, beating Maidenhead United in the first round of the FA Cup before being eliminated by Aldershot. In the League Cup, Colchester hosted First Division Newcastle United in the first round. They won 4–1, but were knocked out by Southampton in round two. In the league, Colchester had a very poor season. Seven consecutive defeats left the club languishing in the bottom four by early October 1960, and they remained no higher than one place above the relegation positions for the rest of the season. Peter Richard Carey (born 14 April 1933) is an English former professional football player and coach who played as a Left back in the Football League for Leyton Orient, Queens Park Rangers, Colchester United and Aldershot making a total of 106 appearances scoring 3 goals. After his playing career Carey was a manager of several non-league teams Playing Career Carey was an amateur player with Barking in the Isthmian League before he began playing with Leyton Orient of Football League Second Division in 1956, appearing in two first team games in the 1956–57 season. John Wright (footballer, Born 1933)
John Francis Dominic Wright (13 August 1933 – 23 November 2023) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Colchester United. He died on 23 November 2023, at the age of 90. Career Born in Aldershot, Wright joined Colchester United from local amateur forms in May 1952, becoming a part-time professional whilst on National Service. He was a serviceman when he made his first-team debut for the club during the 1954–55 season, a 5–3 defeat to Southampton at Layer Road on 30 April 1955. Four of Wright's five first-team appearances for Colchester came during his conscription, largely down to the consistency of Percy Ames as he clocked up four consecutive seasons without missing a game for the club. Wright waited patiently for his next chance, which was to be his final professional game, bringing an end to Ames' string of 236 consecutive appearances.
