1954 U.S. Women's Open
The 1954 U.S. Women's Open was the ninth U.S. Women's Open, held July 1–3 at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts. It was the second conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA). Babe Zaharias won her third U.S. Women's Open, twelve strokes ahead of runner-up Betty Hicks, a record victory margin which still stands. It was the last of her ten Women's major golf championships, major championships and her final U.S. Women's Open as a competitor. Zaharias missed the event in 1953 U.S. Women's Open, 1953 while recovering from surgery for Colorectal cancer, colon cancer. She did not defend in 1955 U.S. Women's Open, 1955 due to back surgery, which discovered that cancer had recurred near her sacrum and she died in September 1956 at age 45. Future four-time champion Mickey Wright, age 19, was the low amateur and tied for fourth place. Peabody () is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 54,481 at the time of the 2020 United States Census. Peabody is located in the North Shore region of Massachusetts, and is known for its rich industrial history. History The area was long inhabited by Native American people known as the Naumkeag. The area was settled as part of Salem in 1626 by a small group of English colonists from Cape Ann led by Roger Conant. It was subsequently referred to as the Northfields, Salem Farms, and Brooksby. Fay Crocker
Fay Crocker (2 August 1914 – 16 September 1983) was a Uruguayan professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. In her career, she won 11 LPGA tournaments, including two major championships, the 1955 U.S. Women's Open and 1960 Titleholders Championship. Crocker was the oldest player to win her first LPGA event, the first U.S. Women's Open champion from outside the United States, and the oldest women's major champion.
