1953–54 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1953–54 NCAA men's ice hockey season began in November 1953 and concluded with the 1954 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 13, 1954 at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was the 7th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 60th year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team. Entering the season, in an effort to more accurately reflect the geographic location of the member school, the MCHL changed the conference name to 'Western Intercollegiate Hockey League'. Broadmoor World Arena (1938)
The Broadmoor World Arena was a ice skating, skating rink and ice hockey, hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers men's ice hockey, Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the Frozen Four, NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. Yale Bulldogs Men's Ice Hockey
The Yale Bulldogs men's ice hockey team represents Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and is the oldest collegiate ice hockey team in the United States. The Bulldogs compete in the Ivy League and the ECAC Hockey League (ECACHL) and play their home games at Ingalls Rink, also called the Yale Whale. The current head coach is Keith Allain, who led the Bulldogs to an Ivy League championship in his first year as head coach (2006–2007 season). Allain is assisted by former QU/UND goaltender, Josh Siembida. On April 13, 2013, the Bulldogs shut out Quinnipiac 4–0 to win their first NCAA Division I Championship. Middlebury Panthers Men's Ice Hockey
The Middlebury Panthers men's ice hockey team represents Middlebury College in men’s hockey and has done so since 1922 (with the exception of a few years during World War II). The Panthers currently play at the NCAA Division III, Division III and have won the most championships (8) of any D-III program. For a time the team did play along with top-level programs but when men's ice hockey divided into separate tiers in the mid-1960s Middlebury left the upper echelon. Doug Binning
Douglas John Binning was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who won a Memorial Cup in 1950 and later starred for Middlebury. Career Binning played for the Montreal Junior Canadiens, then a feeder team for Montreal Canadiens, and helped the team win the 1950 Memorial Cup. The team included several future NHL players such as Charlie Hodge, Don Marshall and Dickie Moore. After winning the championship, Binning was able to continue playing hockey when he started attending Middlebury College. Because the team did not bother to support a freshman team Binning joined the varsity squad from the start and played four years for the program. Defenceman
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from Goal (ice hockey), scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). Bob Kiley (ice Hockey)
Robert J. Kiley was an American ice hockey defenceman who was an All-American for Boston College. Career Kiley joined Boston College a year after the team won its first National Championship. Kiley made the varsity team in 1951 and helped the team finish with a 17–3 record, but they were somehow passed over for the NCAA Tournament. The following year Kiley continued to perform well for the Eagles and he helped BC in the inaugural Beanpot tournament. Though the team finished in 3rd place he was selected for the All-Tournament team. In his senior season, Kiley was again prominent during the Beanpot, this time helping Boston College win the in-season tournament, and BC finished the year with a 17–2 record. This time not only were they selected for the 1954 tournament but Kiley was the only eastern player to be selected as an AHCA First Team All-American. Bill Sloan
William Sloan (June 9, 1934 – May 24, 2022) was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender who previous had the most career wins in NCAA history. Biography Bill Sloan arrived in Canton, New York in the fall of 1952, less than 60 miles from his home town, and immediately made the varsity squad at St. Lawrence. Despite the NCAA's rules limiting athletes to three years of eligibility at the time, the Larries were in need of a goalie and Sloan fit the bill. He helped SLU to a 12–6 record in his first season, earning the first shutout for the Saints in five years. The following year Sloan improved mightily, finishing the year with an 18–3–1 record and helped the Saints tie for the Tri-State League championship. In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as goalie or netminder) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their own team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. Gerald "Spike" Schultz is a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender who set the NCAA record for consecutive shutouts during his first season as the starter for North Dakota. Career Schultz was the Fighting Sioux's main goaltender for the 1953–54 season. The Division I AHCA All-American Teams are an annual honor bestowed by the American Hockey Coaches Association to the college hockey players judged to be the top performers in their division. Each team is composed of at least one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards on ice hockey programs. At least one all-star team has been named by the since the start of NCAA tournament play in 1947–48 after the conclusion of either the regular season or the conference tournaments. Initially the All-American teams weren't named by ACHA. in the first ten years of the teams the players were selected by some combination of media members and team officials. Abbie Moore
Albert W. "Abbie" Moore is a Canadian retired ice hockey center who was the MOP for the 1954 NCAA Tournament. Career Abbie Moore was in the second recruit class for Ned Harkness after Rensselaer brought back its ice hockey program in 1949. After sitting out his freshman season (a common practice as the NCAA restricted students to just three years of varsity play) Moore exploded onto the scene in 1951. Teamed with Frank Chiarelli and Ambrose Mosco, Moore centered one of the most potent scoring lines in college hockey. In just 18 games Moore scored 31 goals and 34 assists, and finished third in the nation in scoring. RPI tripled its win total from the year before and narrowly missed out on its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The tournament Most Outstanding Player is an annual award given out at the conclusion of the NCAA men's ice hockey championship to the player to be judged the most outstanding. The award has been in effect since the adoption of a national championship tournament for the 1947–48 season. History In recent years the award has usually gone to the most outstanding player of the team that won the Division I NCAA Tournament. During the first five years of the tournament the most outstanding player did not come from the winning squad but since 1953 the MOP has not been on the victorious school in only three years (1955, 1960 and 1985).
