Yugoslav Women's Basketball League
Championship of Yugoslavia in Basketball for women took place from in 1945. until 1992, the last in the dominance of one club - Belgrade Crvena zvezda. Although all countries founded after the breakup of Yugoslavia each now have their own national domestic leagues, each of the six nations now take part in the Adriatic League, which was founded in 2001, and which is today the closest league in existence similar to the former Yugoslav Basketball League. History After the formation of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945, there arose a need for athletic development in the fledgling nation. Post-WW2 Yugoslavia was (with the exception of major cities such as Belgrade, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Sarajevo) for the most part lacking in competitive opportunities in sports. ŽKK Crvena Zvezda
Ženski košarkaški klub Crvena zvezda ( sr-cyrl, Женски кошаркашки клуб Црвена звезда, en, Red Star Women Basketball Club), commonly referred to as ŽKK Crvena zvezda or simply Crvena zvezda, is a women's professional basketball club based in Belgrade, Serbia and the major part of the Red Star multi-sports club. Crvena zvezda competes in the EuroCup Women and in the Basketball League of Serbia. The Crvena zvezda squads have won a record 32 National League championships, including 15-in-a-row and 6-in-a-row sequences. They have played three different National Leagues since 1945, including Yugoslav Women's Basketball League (1945–1992), First Women's Basketball League of Serbia and Montenegro (1992–2006) and Serbian League (2006 onwards). Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop.
