1946 Cork Senior Hurling Championship
The 1946 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 58th staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The championship began on 7 April 1946 and ended on 16 November 1946. Glen Rovers were the defending champions. On 16 November 1946, St. Finbarr's won the championship following a 2–3 to 2–1 defeat of Glen Rovers in the final. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. Seán McCaughey
Seán McCaughey ( Irish: Seán Mac Eóchaidh) (1915 – 11 May 1946) was an Irish Republican Army leader in the 1930s and 1940s and hunger striker. Background McCaughey was born in Aughnacloy, County Tyrone in 1915 and in 1921 his family moved to Ardoyne in Belfast. McCaughey was Adjutant-General of the IRA and Officer Commanding (O/C) of its Northern Command. McCaughey was held in high regard and was considered to be one of the best officers of the northern IRA. At the time of his arrest in Rathmines, Dublin on 2 September 1941 he was acting Chief of Staff. Trial and Imprisonment In September 1941 he was found guilty by a Dublin court of having detained and assaulted Stephen Hayes, IRA Chief of Staff who was accused of being a spy for the Irish Free State government. McCaughey was sentenced to death by firing squad. His sentence was commuted to a life sentence of penal servitude. Hunger Striker
A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance in which participants fast as an act of political protest, or to provoke a feeling of guilt in others, usually with the objective to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change. Most hunger strikers will take liquids but not solid food. In cases where an entity (usually the state) has or is able to obtain custody of the hunger striker (such as a prisoner), the hunger strike is often terminated by the custodial entity through the use of force-feeding. Early history Fasting was used as a method of protesting injustice in pre-Christian Ireland, where it was known as ''Troscadh'' or ''Cealachan''. Seandun GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling division in the city of Cork, Ireland. It is one of eight divisions of Cork County Board. It organizes competitions for the clubs within the division, at adult level. The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. In addition, the division selects football and hurling teams from the adult teams playing at junior level or county intermediate level, and these then compete for the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship. Mardyke (UCC)
The Mardyke, also referred as the Mardyke Sports Ground, is the sport and fitness facilities used by sports team representing University College Cork, the general student body, and members of the public. It is based in the Cork district of Mardyke. UCC acquired the grounds in 1911, and rented the main pitch to rugby, soccer, hockey and hurling clubs in the city for a 15% cut of the gate receipts. Outdoors, there are floodlit grass and all-weather pitches, used for soccer, rugby, Gaelic games, and hockey. Kayakers train in the adjacent North channel of the River Lee. There is a tartan track for athletics, where the Cork City Sports are held annually. The most notable performance came in the hammer throw on 3 July 1984, when Yuriy Sedykh and Sergey Litvinov broke the world record six times in one evening. Innishannon
Innishannon or Inishannon () is a large village on the main Cork– Bandon road ( N71) in County Cork, Ireland. Situated on the River Bandon, the village has grown due to its proximity to Cork city, and is now a dormitory town for city workers. History Inishannon village is located at and developed around an important crossing-point on the River Bandon. Formerly controlled by the de Barry family, the area was used as a ferry point on the river from at least the early medieval period. Inishannon received a market and fair grant in 1256, and was given a royal charter in 1412. Valley Rovers GAA Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the parish of Innishannon in County Cork, Ireland. The club was formed in 1919 when two teams in the parish, Innishannon and Knockavilla, came together. The club fields teams in hurling, camogie, Gaelic football and Ladies' football. It participates in the Carrigdhoun division of Cork GAA. As of 2020, the club were playing at Premier senior level in football and Premier intermediate level in hurling. Carbery GAA is a Gaelic football and Hurling division in the south-west area of County Cork, Ireland. The division is one of eight divisions of the Cork County Board and a division is responsible for organising competitions for the clubs within the division from Under 12 up to adult level The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. Ballincollig GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club based in the town of Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland. The club is affiliated with the Cork GAA board and plays in the Muskerry divisional competitions. In 2009, the club will participate in the Cork Senior Football Championship and the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship. Nemo Rangers Hurling & Football Club is a Cork-based Gaelic Athletic Association club on the southside of Cork city, Ireland.
