Helms Athletic Foundation
The Helms Athletic Foundation, founded in 1936, was a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to the promotion of athletics and sportsmanship. Paul H. Helms was the organization's founder and benefactor, funding the foundation via his ownership of Helms Bakery. Bill Schroeder founded the organization with Helms and served as its managing director. The men were united in a love of amateur athletic competition. The organization became well known for presenting awards and trophies for local, national, and international competition, naming the Southern California Player of the Month and Year, national championships in college basketball and college football, Rose Bowl Player of the Game, Coach of the Year, and other such awards for athletic achievement. The DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball program is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's basketball program of DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Herbert Wells Wilkinson (born December 13, 1923) is an American former college basketball player who won the 1944 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament as a freshman while playing for Utah, then transferred to Iowa as a sophomore and became a three-time All-American. Early life Wilkinson was born in Hurricane, Utah and raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Glen Max Morris (March 13, 1925 – January 8, 1998) was an American professional basketball and American football player. He was a consensus All-American in both sports for Northwestern University and later played professional football for the Chicago Rockets and Brooklyn Dodgers of the All-America Football Conference. He also played in the NBA for the Sheboygan Red Skins. Biography Morris was born in Norris City, Illinois and attended Frankfort Community High School in West Frankfort, Illinois where the high school gymnasium is named after Morris. Dick Ives
Richard C. Ives (April 26, 1926 – May 5, 1997) was an American basketball player for the University of Iowa from 1943–44 to 1946–47. A native of Diagonal, Iowa, Ives passed up the opportunity to play college basketball at Drake University on a full athletic scholarship so that he could play at Iowa under coach "Pops" Harrison. Ives had been a stand-out basketball player at Diagonal High School and led the team to the state championship. Ives entered the University of Iowa in the fall of 1943 as a 17-year-old freshman. Due to World War II and the lack of able-bodied male student athletes across the nation, the NCAA allowed freshmen to play varsity sports in college, which until that time had been disallowed. Vincent Garnett Hanson (December 26, 1923 – August 30, 2009) was an NCAA All-American basketball player at Washington State University (WSU) in 1944–45. Hanson was a three-sport star at WSU, playing for the basketball, baseball and track and field teams between 1942–43 and 1947–48. His best season came during his sophomore season of 1944–45. That year, Hanson set a then-national single season scoring record with 592 points, led the Cougars to win the Pacific Coast Conference championship and was named a consensus second-team All-American.
