1944–45 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1944–45 season was the fifty-second season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof in the district Wettstein in Kleinbasel. Emil Junker was the club's new chairman. He took over from Albert Besse following the AGM on 8 July 1944. Overview Max Barras was appointed as new first team manager. Basel played 43 games in their 1944–45 season. 28 in the Nationalliga (including two replayed games), three in the Swiss Cup and 12 were test games. They won 14, drew 10 and lost 19 times. In total, including the test games and the cup competition, they scored 86 goals and conceded 82. René Bader was the best scorer with 14 goals, Willy Monigatti second best with 13. There were 14 teams contesting in the 1944–45 Nationalliga A. The two teams that finished in last and second last position in the league table would be relegated. Walter Müller (footballer, Born 1920)
Walter Müller (2 January 1920 – 14 December 2010) was a Swiss footballer. He played as a goalkeeper. Club football In 1942 Müller moved from his home club FC Birsfelden to FC Basel during their 1942–43 season. His transfer sum (CHF 2500.00) was enormous for its time. Müller played his domestic league debut for his new club in the away game on 5 September 1943 as Basel drew 1–1 with Luzern. Müller spent fourteen years between the posts for RotBlau, mainly as their first choice goalkeeper, playing in total 380 matches. 249 of these games were in the Swiss Nationalliga and 42 were in the Swiss Cup. The other 89 were friendly games. His biggest success was the championship title in Basel's 1952–53 season. Karl Von Arx
Karl von Arx, commonly known by his pseudonym Tschüppeli, (* 1921; † 1982) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1940s. He played as midfielder. Von Arx joined Basel's first team during their 1942–43 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 25 October 1942 against Lugano. He scored his first goal for his club on 21 March 1943 in the away game against Cantonal Neuchatel. But this could not save Basel from a 2–3 defeat. Guglielmo Spadini
Guglielmo Spadini (born 25 October 1911, date of death unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as midfielder. Spadini joined Basel's first team in 1935 from local team Bottecchia. After one test game he played his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game at the Landhof on 7 September 1935. He scored his first goal for them in the same game as Basel won 2–1 against Grasshopper Club. Spadini played eleven seasons for Basel. In his first season (1935–36) for Basel he scored six goals and in Basel's 1936–37 season he was their top goal scorer with 10 goals in 21 appearances. Fritz Schmidlin (born 30 November 1914; date of death unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the second half of the 1930s and the first half of the 1940s. He played as midfielder. Schmidlin played his youth football by FC Basel and joined their first team before their 1934–35 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 10 March 1935 as Basel drew 2–2 with Etoile Carouge. He scored his first goal for his club on 26 January 1936 in the away game against Grasshopper Club. In fact he scored both goals but could not prevent his team's 2–5 defeat. Traugott Oberer
Traugott Oberer (30 November 1924 – 19 April 1974) was a Swiss footballer who played as a forward or, in later years, as midfielder during the 1940s and 1950s. Club football Oberer started his football with FC Basel and advanced to their first team in their 1941–42 season under Manager Eugen Rupf. After one test match, Oberer played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 26 August 1941 as Basel won 5–1 against Concordia Basel. He scored his first league goal for his club one week later on 2 November in the away game against SC Zug. It was the winning goal and Basel won 1–0. Alberto Losa
Alberto Losa (born 1917) was a Swiss footballer who played in the late 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. He played as midfielder. Losa first played at least two seasons for Nordstern Basel. He then moved for the first time to Locarno. Losa joined Basel's first team in their 1940–41 season. He made his debut for his new club in the Swiss Cup on 21 December 1941 in a home game at the Landhof that Basel won 3–0 against Young Boys. Heinz Elsässer (born 11 March 1917) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the second half of the 1930s and in the 1940s. He played mainly as midfielder, but also as defender. Alexander Ebner was a Swiss footballer who played during the 1940s. He played as midfielder. Ebner joined Basel's first team during their 1939–40 season. Ernst Hufschmid (footballer)
Ernst Hufschmid (born 4 February 1913 in Basel – 30 November 2001 in Basel) was a Swiss footballer who played for Basel and Biel-Bienne. He also played for Switzerland in the 1934 FIFA World Cup. He played mainly in the position as midfielder, but in his later career also as defender. Club football Hufschmid played a total of 402 matches for Basel between 1929 and 1950.
