1940–41 Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball Team
The 1940–41 Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball team represented Iowa State College in the 1940–41 college basketball season. The team was led by 13th-year head coach Louis Menze. In 1939–40, the Cyclones finished 9–9 overall (2–8 in the Big Six Conference). The team's captains were Al Budolfson and Gordon Nicholas. The Cyclones shared the Big Six conference championship with the Kansas Jayhawks. This marked the first time that Iowa State had ever qualified for the postseason; they would face Creighton in a district qualifying game for the 1941 NCAA Tournament, where they would fall, 57–48. Louis Menze
Louis Edmond Menze (June 28, 1894 – October 7, 1982) was a college basketball, college men's basketball coach and athletics administrator. Professional career He was the head coach of Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball, Iowa State from 1928 to 1947. He coached Iowa State to a 166–153 record, winning four Big Eight Conference, Big Six Conference championships and made the 1944 Final Four in one NCAA tournament appearance. He also served as Iowa State's athletic director from 1945 to 1958. He was inducted into the Iowa State athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
