Helms Athletic Foundation
The Helms Athletic Foundation, founded in 1936, was a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to the promotion of athletics and sportsmanship. Paul H. Helms was the organization's founder and benefactor, funding the foundation via his ownership of Helms Bakery. Bill Schroeder founded the organization with Helms and served as its managing director. The men were united in a love of amateur athletic competition. The organization became well known for presenting awards and trophies for local, national, and international competition, naming the Southern California Player of the Month and Year, national championships in college basketball and college football, Rose Bowl Player of the Game, Coach of the Year, and other such awards for athletic achievement. James Carlos McNatt (December 19, 1918 – December 23, 2000)http://files.usgwarchives.net/tx/ector/obits/odessa/2000/obit/122900.txt was an All-American basketball player for the Oklahoma Sooners and the AAU's Phillips 66ers. At Oklahoma, McNatt led his team to the first-ever NCAA final Four in 1939, and at Phillips 66, McNatt guided the 66ers (also called the "Oilers") to four consecutive AAU national championships (1943, 1944, 1945, and 1946). Bobby Moers
Robert Moers (August 9, 1918 – September 1, 1986) was a college basketball, baseball, and football player for The University of Texas at Austin. Known for his outstanding dribbling skills, Moers was a three-year letterman under Texas basketball head coach Jack Gray from 1938 to 1940. The Rhode Island Rams men's basketball team is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference. Stanley Stutz (born Stanley John Modzelewski; April 14, 1920 – October 28, 1975) was an American professional basketball player. Stutz, a 5'10" guard-forward from Worcester, Massachusetts, attended the University of Rhode Island where he led the NCAA in scoring three consecutive years from 1940–1942. Fernando Frederick Beretta (January 24, 1917 – November 17, 1962) was an American basketball player. He is best known for his All-American college career with Purdue University. Beretta played at Bedford High School in Bedford, Indiana, then went to Purdue to play college basketball. At Purdue Beretta was a three-year letterman, a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and earned first-team All-Big Ten Conference and first-team All-American honors from the Helms Athletic Foundation as a senior in 1940. A guard, Beretta was known as a strong defender and ballhandler.
