1940 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship
The 1940 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship was the 12th staging of the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament for boys under the age of 18. Roscommon entered the championship as defending champions, however, they were defeated in the Connacht Championship. On 22 September 1940, Louth won the championship following a 5–05 to 2–07 defeat of Mayo in the All-Ireland final. This was their second All-Ireland title and their first in four championship seasons. The Louth County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae an Lú) or Louth GAA is one of the 32 County board (Gaelic games), county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Louth. MacHale Park
MacHale Park () is a GAA stadium in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. It is the home of the Castlebar Mitchels GAA and Mayo GAA Gaelic football teams. Built in 1931, as of 2022 the ground has a capacity of approximately 28,000 and is named after John MacHale, Catholic Archbishop of Tuam from 1831 to 1881. Lann Léire CPG is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club that fields gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. It is based in the County Louth town of Dunleer. The club plays home matches at Páirc Uí Mhuirí, named after Larry Murray, the Louth priest who made a significant contribution to GAA affairs in the county and elsewhere. As of 2023, the club competes in the Louth Junior Championship and Division 2 of the county football Leagues. Former Louth captain Nicky Malone is the senior team manager. History A club called Thomas Davis existed in Dunleer in the 1940s. Louth GAA records show that they won the Second Division Championship in 1946. Seán O'Mahony's GFC
Seán O'Mahony's GFC is a Gaelic football club based in Dundalk, County Louth. History The club was founded in 1938 and named after the Irish republican Seán O'Mahony. They won the 2014 Louth Intermediate Football Championship and went on to win that year's Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship. In 2015 the club reached the final of the Louth Senior Football Championship for the first time and won it in 2016 by defeating St Mary's of Ardee. O'Mahony's then advanced to the 2016–17 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship, defeating Baltinglass and Newbridge Sarsfields before losing 0–12 to 1–05 in the Leinster semi-final against Rhode at the Gaelic Grounds. Peter Corr
Peter Joseph Corr (23 June 1923 – 1 June 2001) was an Irish footballer. Corr played as an outside-right for, among others, Everton and Ireland. In 1949 he was a member of the Ireland team that defeated England 2–0 at Goodison Park, becoming the first non-UK team to beat England at home. He was the uncle of Jim, Sharon, Caroline and Andrea Corr who make up the Irish musical group The Corrs. His brother Gerry is their father. After a three-year-long battle with Alzheimer's disease, Corr died in a nursing home in Goosnargh in June 2001, aged 77. Playing career Club career Corr, who played Gaelic football as a youth, played soccer for his hometown club Dundalk before signing for Preston N.E. in April 1947 for a fee of £2,500. However his appearances for Preston were limited by the form of Tom Finney and he only made three league appearances for Preston before joining Everton in August 1948. Dowdallshill GF & AC is a GAA club from Dundalk, County Louth, which fields Gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. Of the six gaelic football clubs in the Dundalk urban area, Dowdallshill is the only one located north of the Castletown River. History The Dowdallshill club was founded in 1886, making it one of the oldest gaelic football teams in Ireland. They contested the inaugural Louth Senior Football Championship final in 1887 against Dundalk Young Irelands, who beat them by 0–03 to 0–02 at Haggardstown. 1934 was a vintage year for the club. The MacArdle Cup for the Louth Junior League was won with victory in the final against Geraldines. A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to.
