1939–40 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1939–40 season was the forty-seventh season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof in the district Wettstein in Kleinbasel. Albert Besse was the club's new chairman. He took over from Emil Junker at the AGM on 15 July 1939. Due to the outbreak the Second World War on 1 September 1939 the start of the Swiss football championship was postponed until 22 October. The 1. Liga was postponed until December and it was completely reorganised for this season. This was played as "Championnat Suisse de Mobilisation" due to the Second World War. This was a political and cultural movement that had already become increasingly important during the late 1930s. Politicians, intellectuals and media professionals had increasingly called for measures to strengthen Switzerland's basic cultural values. Henri Bernard (footballer)
Henri Bernard (10 March 1914 – 3 July 1942) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as defender. Bernard joined Basel's first team in their 1938–39 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 11 December 1938 as Basel were defeated 0–2 by La Chaux-de-Fonds. He scored his first goal for his club on 18 May 1939 in the home game at the Landhof against Lugano as Basel won 7–0. Paul Wechlin
Paul Wechlin (10 February 1920 - 4 July 2013) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as goalkeeper. Football career Wechlin played his youth football by FC Basel and joined the first team during their 1939–40 season under first team co-managers Walter Dietrich and Max Galler. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 10 September 1939 as Basel won 4–2 against Aarau. During his time with Basel he shared the goalkeeping in the beginning with Kurt Imhof and Silvio Cinguetti later with Walter Müller. Between the years 1939 and 1949 Wechlin played a total of 80 games for Basel. 52 of these games were in the Nationalliga and 1. Liga, seven in the Swiss Cup and 21 were friendly games. Kurt Imhof
Kurt Imhof (* 1914; † unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played in the position of goalkeeper. Between the years 1932 and 1935 and again between 1938 and 1947 Imhof played a total of 128 games for Basel. 85 of these games were in the Swiss Nationalliga, five were in the 1 Liga (second highest tier) and 15 were in the Swiss Cup. The other 22 were friendly games. He was a member of the Basel team that won the Swiss Cup in the 1932–33 season. The final was played in the Hardturm stadium against Grasshopper Club. SC Zofingen
SC Zofingen is a Swiss football club based in Zofingen, Canton Aargau which is a short distance from Zürich. It was founded on 10 August 1896. They currently play in the Swiss 1. Liga, the third tier of Swiss football. History In 1971 the club were promoted to the Challenge League, the 2nd tier of the Swiss football pyramid. Werner Wenk
Werner Simon Heinz Wenk (26 October 1922 – 25 March 2017) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1940s and early 1950s as midfielder. Biography Wenk played his youth football by FC Basel and advanced to their first team during their 1939–40 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 10 March 1940. He scored his first goal for his club during that game as Basel won 4–1 against local rivals FC Birsfelden. In the last game of the group stage in that season on 23 June Wenk scored a hat-trick as Basel won 6–1 against Solothurn. Basel were winners of the group stage and progressed to the play-off stage. Hermann Suter (footballer)
Hermann Suter (17 April 1920 - 22 August 2005) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the 1940s and 1950s. He also played one season for Young Fellows Zürich. He played mainly as a striker, but also as a midfielder. Suter played his youth football by Basel and joined their first team in their 1939–40 season under first team co-managers Walter Dietrich and Max Galler. After appearing in three test matches, he played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 3 December 1939. He scored his first goal in the same game as Basel won 5–0 against Solothurn. During the season Suter played five games in the group stage and four in the championship play-offs. He scored five goals, including one in the play-off final against Fribourg as Basel won 2–1 to become 1 Liga champions. Fritz Schmidlin
Fritz Schmidlin (born 30 November 1914; date of death unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the second half of the 1930s and the first half of the 1940s. He played as midfielder. Schmidlin played his youth football by FC Basel and joined their first team before their 1934–35 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 10 March 1935 as Basel drew 2–2 with Etoile Carouge. He scored his first goal for his club on 26 January 1936 in the away game against Grasshopper Club. In fact he scored both goals but could not prevent his team's 2–5 defeat. Schmidlin played eleven years for Basel. In the season 1938/39 Schmidlin and the team suffered relegation to the 1 Liga. FC Fribourg is a Swiss football club from the town of Fribourg in the Canton of Fribourg. In the 2022–23 season, the team plays in 2. AC Bellinzona is a Swiss football club based in Bellinzona. It was founded in 1904, and won the Swiss Super League in 1948.
