1939–40 Duquesne Dukes Men's Basketball Team
The 1939–40 Duquesne Dukes men's basketball team represented Duquesne University during the 1939–40 NCAA men's basketball season. The Dukes were led by head coach Chick Davies and played their home games at Duquesne Gardens in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Playing as an NCAA independent, Duquesne finished the regular season with a 17–1 record. The team advanced to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament before losing to Colorado, then played in the NCAA tournament where they reached the only Final Four in program history. The Dukes finished with a 20–3 record overall with two of the losses coming to National champion Indiana. Chick Davies (basketball)
Charles Robinson "Chick" Davies (March 1900 – April 15, 1985) was an American basketball coach. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Duquesne University from 1924 to 1948, compiling a record of 314–106. Davies' teams played in one NCAA tournament and three National Invitation Tournaments. He led Duquesne to the 1940 NCAA Final Four as well as the 1940 NIT championship game, where the Dukes lost to Colorado. Davies was born in March 1900 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He died on April 15, 1985, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Duquesne Dukes are the athletic teams of Duquesne University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Dukes compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Football and bowling, however, compete in the Northeast Conference.
