The 1937–38 NCAA men's basketball season began in December 1937, progressed through the regular season and conference tournaments, and concluded in March 1938. Jewell Isaac Young (January 18, 1913 – April 16, 2003) was an American basketball player. He was an NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans, All-American at Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball, Purdue University and an early professional. Young played at Jefferson High School (Indiana), Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana and played collegiately at nearby Purdue University for future Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame coach Ward Lambert, Ward "Piggy" Lambert. Young was a two-time consensus All-American at Purdue in 1937 and 1938. Louis "Pick" Dehner, sometimes stylized as "Lewis," (August 29, 1914 – April 7, 1987) was an American basketball player and high school coach. He was an All-American player at the University of Illinois, played professionally in the United States National Basketball League, and won over 500 games as the coach for East St. Louis High School in Illinois. Dehner was born and raised in Lincoln, Illinois. A 6'4" forward/center, he played for Illinois in the 1934–35 season, then returned to play for the Illini from 1937 to 1939. He was a two-time All-American for the Illini, and scored a then-record 25 points at Madison Square Garden on December 27, 1938. Chuck Chuckovits
Charles H. Chuckovitz (July 10, 1912 – August 12, 1991) was an American professional basketball player in the 1930s and 1940s. A 6'1" guard-forward who starred at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, he became an All-American at the University of Toledo. He broke Ohio's single-season and career collegiate scoring marks, both previously held by Wooster star Nick Frascella. He also set a three-year intercollegiate scoring record with 1,149 points. Chuckovitz played two seasons in the National Basketball League as a member of the Hammond Ciesar All-Americans and the Toledo Jim White Chevrolets. He received all-league honors with Toledo during the 1941–42 season after leading the NBL with an 18.5 points per game average, which was a new single-season record. Ernie Andres
Ernest Henry Andres (January 11, 1918 – September 19, 2008), nicknamed "Junie", was an American third baseman in Major League Baseball who played for the Boston Red Sox in the season. Born in Jeffersonville, Indiana, he batted and threw right-handed. Andres' professional career lasted from 1939 to 1941 and 1946 to 1947. He missed four seasons (1942–1945) while serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. Andres appeared in 15 games played during the first month of the Red Sox' 1946 season. He was Boston's Opening Day third baseman as a rookie, and shared that position with Rip Russell through May 16. However, Andres' batting issues resulted in his demotion to the minor leagues. During his month in the Majors, he batted 41 times and his four hits included two doubles.
