The 1930–31 National Hurling League was the fifth edition of the National Hurling League, which ran from 1 March 1931 to 29 November 1931. The twelve participating teams were Antrim, Clare, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford, who were divided into three different divisions. Each team played each of their rivals once with two points awarded for a win and one point awarded for a drawn game. Galway defeated Tipperary by 4–5 to 4–4 in the final, achieving their first win. Ignatius Harney
James Ignatius Harney (16 February 1903 – 1 September 1954) was an Irish hurler who played for his local club Tynagh and at senior level for the Galway county team from 1920 until 1934. Playing career Club Harney played his club hurling with his local club in Tynagh. He won his first senior county title in 1920. Harney added further county medals to his collection in 1922, 1923, 1925 and 1928. Inter-county Harney first came to prominence on the inter-county scene with Galway in 1920. At the time Galway were unopposed in the Connacht Championship and had an easy passage to the All-Ireland semi-final every year. Harney's side lost to Dublin and Limerick respectively in the All-Ireland semi-finals of 1920 and 1921. In 1922 the Connacht championship was revived for the first time since 1917. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois. Portumna
Portumna (- meaning 'the landing place of the oak') is a market town in the south-east of County Galway, Ireland, on the border with and linked by a Portumna bridge, bridge to County Tipperary. The town is located to the west of the point where the River Shannon enters Lough Derg (Shannon), Lough Derg. The Meath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Meath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Meath, as well as for Meath county teams. Football County team The first notable Meath team was the Pierce O'Mahony's club from Navan that represented the county in the All-Ireland final of 1895, when the competition used to be played between the champion clubs from each county. O'Mahony's lost to Arravale Rovers of Tipperary by 0-4 to 0-3. The county had to wait until 1939 for its next appearance at All-Ireland level, this time losing narrowly to Kerry by 2-5 to 2-3 in the final. Martin Kennedy (hurler)
Martin Kennedy (20 November 1898 – 17 July 1983) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Toomevara and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1922 until 1936. Kennedy is regarded as one of Tipperary's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club Kennedy first played club hurling as a goalkeeper with the Borrisoleigh club. He had been born in that portion of the parish and contested two county intermediate finals before transferring his allegiance to the Toomevara club in 1919. It was only when the regular full-forward on that team got injured that Kennedy was used in this position and he went on to enjoy much success. He won his first senior county title in 1919 and added further county medals in 1923, 1930 and 1931. Kennedy continued to play until well into his forties and joined the Kildangan club after marrying and settling there. The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams.
